Module 9 Great inventions ARadio, telephone and television are widely used in the world. When you 1 the radio, you can listen. But when you use telephone, not only can you listen to others 2 you can chat with them, however, you cant see the other one at all. Television is 3 than both of them. People can watch TV and listen to it, 4 you cant take part in what you see.Today, some people are using a type of telephone 5 vision-phone. Two persons who are talking can see each other 6 it.Vision-phones can be of great use when you have something 7 the person whom you are calling. It may also have other uses in the future. Some day you may be able to call up a 8 and ask to read a book right over your vision-phone. You may be able to do the shopping through it, too. Perhaps 9 the near future, vision-phone will come into wider uses in our 10_ life.( )1.Aturn onBturn offC. turn down Dturn up( )2.A. andB. but tooC. but alsoDso( )3.Amore betterBmuch worseC. very good Dmuch better( )4.AorBbutC. while D. and( )5.AcallingBcallsC. calledDare called( )6.A. withoutBwithC. forDinto( )7.Ato showBshowingC. to be shown Dshown( )8.AbankBhospitalC. park Dlibrary( )9.A. inB. onC. byD. without( )10.AsomedayBevery dayC. one day DeverydayB Man has invented four kinds of satellites . You are driving along a desert or on a mountain. You have no idea where you are. You passed the last house two hours ago. Then your car breaks down. It is night and it is cold. You have no mobile phone. What do you do Well, next time take a GPS with you. This invention may be able to help you. It is a device(装置) which uses satellites (卫星) to find the users position(位置). It can find your position to within 20 metres. A GPS cannot start your car, but at least you will know where you are. GPS, which means Global Positioning System, is a small radio receiver. It looks like a mobile phone. You can hold it in your hand, or put in your pocket. It is sometimes put into a watch or a telephone. We also find GPS devices in cars, planes, or boats. Some of these devices have electronic maps, so you know where you are. For example, in a city they can tell you the name of the street. There are three parts to the Global Positioning System. The first part is the receiver. You can hold it in your hand, or have it fixed into your car, plane, etc. The second part is a group of satellites orbiting the Earth. The receiver contacts at least four of the satellites and calculates(计算) its position. The third part of the system is a network of ground stations. They are all over the world. They control the satellites and make sure they are working well. Some people think that in the future the GPS will be as common as the mobile. They are becoming cheaper and more and more accurate(精确的). There are also new uses for the GPS. Perhaps they will become like watches. Everyone will have one and you will never be lost again.( ) 1According to the passage, with the help of the GPS, people _.A.cant be lost in a new cityB.cant find their way in different countriesC.can learn about the culture of an unknown placeD.can spend the least time getting to another place( ) 2.We can learn from the passage that _. A.there are three parts to the GPS B.a GPS cant be put into a watch C.a GPS can help you start your car D.the GPS are becoming more and more expensive( ) 3.The underlined word “They” in paragraph 3 means “_”. A. ReceiversB. GPS devices C. SatellitesD. Ground stations( ) 4.The passage is mainly about _. A. the history of the GPSB. the introduction of the GPS C. the shape of the GPSD. the three parts of the GPS( ) 5.What can we infer(推断) from the passageA.All GPS devices have electronic maps.B.People in many countries will use the GPS for free.C.The receiver of the GPS contacts at least five of the satellites.D.The GPS will become more and more common in everyday life.DRobots have come a long way since 15th century. Weve got robots to build cars, carry heavy things, work in dangerous places and explore planets. But things havent stopped there. In 1986, Honda made a robot called ASIMO. And now, it has been developed greatly. Standing at 130cm and weighing 54kg. ASIMO is very much like a small astronaut wearing a bag on the back. And he can walk, flight, climb and run fast. Isnt it wonderful? The worlds first robot teacher is Saya. With her human-like face, she can show expressions like happiness, surprise, sadness, dislike, fear and she can even smile or show anger at students, which look much like a real teachers. To do this, her rubber skin is pulled from the back with motors inside. And her eyes and mouth have wires(电线) too. She can also say some simple words like “hello” or “thank you”.In the UK, the development of robots is exciting. The mini-robots will send food, clean floors, collect and throw away waste. These robots can open doors by themselves and stop if anything or anyone is in the way. These mini-robots are very useful for controlling infection(传染). Usually clean and dirty work is done by the same person, but here, youll have robots that do”dirty work”, like collecting dirty sheets, or taking away hospital waste; and youll have robots that do”clean work”, like bringing meals or clean sheets to patients. The robots have separate work so theres no way for infection, which is great. But of course, robots would not take the piece of humans, but would free up more time for nurses to be with patients. But if this is what its like in 2020, whats it going to be like to 2021?( ) 1.In the following, which is ASIMOs behavior? A. Smiling at people, saying “hello”. B. Sending food or opening doors by himself C. Fighting, climbing or running fast D. Collecting waste for patients( ) 2.What makes Saya look real? A. Her face and rich expressions B. Her clothes and shoes C. Her walking and running speed D. Her rich knowledge( ) 3.Which of the following is true according to the passage? A. Robots have come a long way since 1986. B. The first robot teacher was made by Honda. C. Saya looks like a small astronaut. D. If anyone or anything is in the way, mini-robots will stop.( ) 4.The main idea of Paragraph 5 is that _. A. nurses would have more free time with patients B. robots would not take the place of humans C. dirty and clean work is always done by the same person D.mini-robots are useful for controlling infectionE “Life is speeding up. Everyone is getting unwell.”This may sound like something someone would say today. But in fact, an unknown person who lived in Rome in 53 AD wrote it.We all love new inventions. They are exciting, amazing and can even change our lives. But have all these developments really improved the quality of our lives?Picture this. Youre rushing to finish your homework on the computer. Your mobile phone rings, a QQ message from your friend appears on the screen, the noise from the television is getting louder and louder. Suddenly the computer goes blank and you lose all your work. Now you have to stay up all night to get it done. How happy do you feel?Inventions have speeded up our lives so much that they often leave up feeling stressed (重压) and tired. Why do you think people who live far away from noisy cities, who have no telephones, no car, not even any electricity often seem to be happier? Perhaps because they live simpler lives. One family in the UK went “back in time” to see what life was like without all the inventions we have today. The grandparents, with their daughter, and grandsons Benjamin, 10 and Thomans, 7, spent nine weeks in a 1940s house. They had no washing machine, microwave, computer or mobile phones. The grandmother, Lyn, said, “The more things you have, the more difficult life becomes.” The boys said they fought less. Probably, they said, because there was less to fight over, such as their computer. Benjamin also noticed that his grandmother had changed from being a trendy (时髦的), beer-drinking granny, to one who cooked things.根据以上短文内容,然后从每题所给的四个选项中选择最佳选项。1.
