Communication is a form of human behavior derived from a need to connect and interact with other human beings.CultureDefinition of Culture Culture refers to the total way of life of a people,that is their customs, traditions, social habits, values, beliefs, language, and ways of thinking and dai

Culture includes literature, drama, film, music, painting, philosophy and history, etc.文化是一种智慧,是一种力量,是一种情怀,是一种温暖,是一种影响力,是一种生产力。 Human beings draw close to one another by common nature and customs keep them apart. Cultural diversity Cultural diversity is the reality. Business must deal

10、 with it. Individuals within organizations must also come to terms with diversity. The way to deal with diversity is not to deny it or ignore it, but to learn about differences so they dont impair communication and successful business transactions.Impair: weaken or damage The culture of a nation has

11、 a set of etiquette patterns that distinguish it from those of other cultures. Cultural difference calls for the cultural exchange. It blesses with (赋予)a cultural world and a rich life. In the realm of existence, the most beautiful state is difference; in the realm of difference, the most beautiful

16、CULTURAL COMMUNICATIONIntercultural communication Intercultural Communication is about the unique relationship between communication and culture. More specifically, it is about what happens when people from different cultures come together to share ideas, feelings, information & negotiations in

17、doing business. The first step in effective intercultural communication is acceptance of diversity. Communicating across cultures is a process of making meanings, of people understanding one another so they can get to know one another, build relationships, and solve problems together. It should not

18、be words on paper, but ideas in practice. The civilizations of different nations are all fruits of human wisdom and contribution to human progress; they call for mutual respect. Conflicts triggered by ignorance or prejudice are sometimes more dreadful than those caused by contradictory interests. We

19、 propose to seek common ground in the spirit of equality and tolerance, and carry on extensive civilization dialogue and closer cultural exchange. enduring significance Close Intercultural communication is a key characteristics in todays internationalized world. The need to communicate is a key char

20、acteristics of human society. Translation, in nature, is a bilingual and bicultural communication 各民族的文明都是人类智慧的成果,对人类进步做出了贡献,应该彼此尊重。人类因无知或偏见引起的冲突,有时比利益引起的冲突更可怕。我们主张以平等和包容的精神,努力寻找双方的共同点,开展广泛的文明对话和深入的文化交流。 The Development of ICC Study The study of Intercultural Communication originated in America (in

21、1950s) and it was spreading to the world since then and turning to be a branch of Mass Communication (in 1970s), while in China with its rapid developing economy and increasing encounter with foreign countries the study has been also moving forward at a remarkable speech since 1980sRationale(理由) Wor

22、ldwide interest in intercultural communication grows out of two interrelated premises.(前提) First, you live in an age when changes in technology, travel, economic and political systems, immigration patterns, and population density have created a world in which you may regularly interact with people f

23、rom different cultures.Whether or not you welcome those changes,they will continue to grow in both frequencyand intensity. Second, people are now sensitive to tour that culture affects communication in subtleand profound ways. Your cultural background and experiences help determine how the world app

24、ears to you and how you interact with that world.Approach Fundamental to our approach is the belief that all forms of human communication involve action. Communication is an activity that affects you as well as the recipients(接受者) of your action. Whether you are generating or receiving words or move

25、ments, you are creating and producing messages that are received and responded to other people. Any study of communication must include information about the choices you make in your messages, as well as a discussion of the consequences of those choices. Hence, this course takes the view that engagi

26、ng in intercultural communication is pragmatic (you do something, 实用) philosophical, and ethical ( your selected choices have a consequence 伦理,道德).Philosophy The world has grown so small that now we must all depend on each otherwhether we want it or not. As simplistic as it sounds, what happens in o

27、ne place in the world now can affect people in many, many other places. Butterfly EffectCase Analysis Now, more than any other time in history, what happens in one part of the world touches all parts of the world. Case 1:The U.S. home mortgage crisis impacts world financial markets. Case 2: An earth

28、quake in Taiwan halts microchip production and the world electronics industry comes to a temporary standstill. Second, many of the obstacles to understanding can be reduced by motivation, knowledge, and an appreciation of cultural diversity. A mutual philosophy about intercultural communication is o

29、ur contention that the first commandment(戒条)of any civilized society must be: ALLOW PEOPLE TO BE DIFFERENT AS LONG AS THOSE DISSIMILARITIES DO NOT CREATE HARDSHIPS FOR OTHERS.Teaching Objective The teaching objective of ICC includes international outlook, familiarity with Chinese and foreign culture

30、s and etiquette(礼仪), abilities to follow international practices in international business, handle various relations, and negotiate and transact. The students should not only know, but also understand how and why it is important to develop the communicative skills that will help you interact with pe

31、ople from other cultures. Weight should be put in cultivating sensitivity to differences between cultures tolerance and flexibility in handling cultural differences. This is especially important to students who are majoring in international business or foreign language studies, where there is an urg

32、ent need for highly developed interpersonal communication skills and intercultural business communication competence. Consecutive interpreting is widely used in foreign affairs. A foreign language and a native language play their functions simultaneously,like two wings of a bird. If the two wings are not equivalent in strength, the bird will not fly. So is Interpretation and translation. Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning, a lion wakes up.
