2、 gree ns. At ni ghtwhen the sky is dotted with stars, and people can see the Milky Wayspanning from the north to the south. On each bank of it is a bright star,which see each other from afar. They are the Cowherd and Weaver Maid,and about them there is a beautiful love story passed dow n from genera

3、ti on togen erati on.Long, long ago, there was an honest and kind-hearted fellow named Niu Lang (Cowha nd). His pare nts died whe n he was a child. Laterhe was driven out of his home by his sister-i n-law. So he lived by himselfherd ing cattle and farmi ng. One day, a fairy from heave n Zhi Nu(Weave

4、r Maid) fell in love2with him and came dow n secretly to earth and married him. The cowhand farmed in the field and the Weaver Maid wove at home. They lived ahappy life and gave birth to a boy and a girl. Unfortun ately, the God ofHeave n soon found out the fact and ordered the Quee n Mother of theW

5、ester n Heave ns to bring the Weaver Maid back.With the help of celestial cattle, the Cowhand flew to heave n withhis son and daughter. At the time whe n he was about to catch up with hiswife, the Queen Mother took off one of her gold hairp ins and made astroke. One billowy river appeared in front o

6、f the Cowha nd. The Cowhand and Weaver Maid were separated on the two banks forever and couldonly feel their tears. Their loyalty to love touched magpies, so tens ofthousands of magpies came to build a bridge for the Cowhand andWeaver Maid to meet each other. The Queen Mother was eve ntuallymoved an

7、d allowed them to meet each year on the 7th of the 7th lunarmon th. Hence their meet ing date has bee n called Qi Xi (Double Seventh).Scholars have show nthe Double Seve nth Festivaloriginated from the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD220). Historical docume ntsfrom the Easter n Jin Dyn asty (AD371-420) men ti

8、o n the festival, whilerecords from the Tang Dynasty (618-907) depict the gra nd eve ningbanq uet of Emperor Taiz ong and hisconcubines.By the Song (960-1279) and Yuan (1279-1368)3dyn asties, special articles for the Qi Xi were see n being sold onmarkets in the capital. The bustl ing markets dem on

9、strated the sig ni ficanee of the festival.Today some traditi onal customs are still observed in ruralareas of China, but have bee n weake ned or diluted in urba ncities.
