Between the war, the dot- collapse,loss of faithin corporate leadership,and a limp economy, if you
2、' re unempioyed rightnow, you may wonder if you' ll ever work again. Unemployment is steadyor in creas ing, depending on whom you believe. Federal, state, and local gover nments are cutt ing p rograms and rais ing taxes. it feels as though we re spiralingdownward toward an unknown bottom. it
3、 ' s no wonder thatan ger and fear among job seekers is palp able.The hiring scene, i ' m learning, isn ' t so great either. i' m lookingfor a mid-level man ager, and this an xiety and an ger is evide nt in the people i ' min terview ing.What seemsstra ngest is that can didates f
4、or thejob seemto have adapted to these strange times by moving to polar extremes. They' re either totally obsequious doormats who are essentially offering to work for food or are p letely arroga nt and believe they deserve a circa-1999 dot- salary, work environment and perks. There isn ' t m
5、uchin betwee n. Where are the people who are reas on ably self-c on fide nt?Having just con ducted my own job search, i un dersta nd how easy it is to think that you must be doing something wrong if you aren' t gettingin terviews,callbacks, or offers. The advice from book authors and careercouns
6、elors - who often suggest that there are “right ” ways land a job -can amp lify that an xiety.i remember read ing various bits of job-seek ing advice and won deri ng if these exp erts could p ossibly be talk ing about me. Wasi not eager eno ugh, or too eager? Wasmyeye con tact strong, too weak, or h
7、ostile? Wasmyresume just right? if you ' re not getting results, it ' s easy to think you need a makeover.So where am i going with this? i want to share two poin ts that i hopewill be help ful. First, relax and realize that you may not be doinganything wrong in your job search. it may be jus
8、t that it' s harder toare. And i know you' re scared. i know you' 't lose your cool or your self-respect.get a job now. Try to be who you were before you got scared and an gry, because that ' s who you really re angry and dep ressed. But donrejections wear you down to the point w
9、hereit ' s easy to let cumulativeyou' ll take almost any job at any salary. Remember that i have not see nyou before; i don ' t know about these rejections, and i' m not judgingyou because of them. The rejectionsyou' ve faced are cumulative in yourmind only. decent empioyers don
10、' t want to hire you at a salary you can ' t live on, so don ' t give yourself away.And you don' t have to be ashamedor apologetic if you' re a and working at Target. i ' ll respect you for it. A potential empioyer who doesn' tt beunderstand that you' re doing the bes
11、t you can is a jerk and wona dece nt boss.Second, in dividuals seek ing work sometimes do stra nge things that don t hel p them get the job. P erha ps the advice books are talk ing to these people when they offer tips on how to present yourself. So, it' s withlove and p assi on that i relate som
12、e of these in cide nts to you.One resume i received included a plete copyright statement on each page. dis pl ayed in 12-point type, it was the resume s most prominent feature. What meaning does a cop yright have in the con text of a resume? Who would cop yright a resume? This is just plain weird. O
13、bviously, this person doesn' t understand the purpose of a copyright. Can i see past that and give him a shot? Maybe, whe n i ' m feeli ng p articularly p assi on ate, but why would i want to whe n i can choose among 80 other people with similar qualifications?if you don' t understand so
14、mething you' re putting on yourresume, leave it off. Perhaps that' s petty, but we have to weed peopleout somehow and first impressions really do matter卾 ery much.One applicant forgot to attach a resume to his e-mail. i wrote him back, saying i ' d love to consider him and asking him to
15、send me a resume. He e-mailed aga in, this time with a resume attached. But the n he went on in the e-mail to talk about how it was mye-mail system that must have removed the attachme nt. Hmm 卼 hat' s odd, because i ' ve received doze ns of other attachme nts in the same format from other ap
16、p lica nts. Why eve n suggest that i screwed up somehow?This doesn' t help, not because i ' mdefensive about my e-mail system, but because an applicant gains nothing by blaming me for anything. Let it go, or take the blame yourself. That' s a basiccustomer-service princip le.How about sp
17、 elli ng? Now, more tha n ever, you should check your resume and your cover letters. But i see plenty of mistakes, and because the people i minterviewingare well-educated, i have to assumethey re sloppy-which is worse tha n being a bad sp eller.Yes, you' re sending out doze nsof cover letters, b
18、ut rememberyou' re sending only one to me. i ' mjudging you by that one letter.Follow up. i ' m surprised by the number of people who say they ' re going to send mesomework samp les and the n don' t send any thi ng. if it ' s because you don' t want the job, it ' s st
19、ill bad form. But if you do want the job and don' t follow through, how can i conclude you' ll follow through with anything? if i don ' t hear back, you won ' t hear from me.Address the qualifications in my ad. You wouldn' t believe how manyapplicants don ' t have any of the
20、three or four specific requirements i list in my ad. if you don ' t have the skills, tell me why you think you're the right can didate n evertheless. But don' t just ignore the issue.i ' ll read your resume, and i ' ll actually spend a good bit of time on it because i ' ll be
21、 trying to figure out why you applied. Then i ' ll shake my head, and move your e- mail into the “reject ” folder.Arrive on time for the in terview. Basic, right? i send direct ions with a map to people i in vite for an in terview, and they still show up late,saying they got lost. These are coll
22、ege graduates; manyeven have advaneed degrees. if you really want the job, leave your house two hours early, or drive to the in terview locati onthe day before so you know how to findit.Be yourself.Times will get better.
