J: Uh-huh. I know Im your guest here in China, gentlemen, but I would really like to pay for the meal if

17、in North America, we think a 10% discount on orders over 100,000 pieces per quarter is acceptable, 12% over 200,000, and so on, up to 500,000. S: I think I can accept that, if you really feel you can sell such large numbers. J: I believe that we can. S: Ill tell you what; I can give you the discount

Word study 知识点讲解1.cater to 迎合这词组可指迎合.的爱好,或设法配合.的需求、要求,等于cater for。The shop caters to a small, wealthy client
20、ele.这家店迎合少数有钱顾客的需求。 2.judging from 由.看来,根据.依据英语文法规则,主要子句与分词子句的主词必需要一致,才能将分词子句之主词省略。但judging from已成为惯用语,故judging from该子句所省略之主词,与后接之主要子句之主词虽不一致,仍为正确用法。Judging from his sales performance, he will definitely be promoted to group leader.从他的业绩看,他一定会升任组长。 3.rely on 依赖;凭借这是一个双字动词,即动词与介词必须合用,才算正确用法。rely,依靠,信
21、赖;介词on之后的受词可以是人、事或组织。Mr. Lee relied on his secretary to prepare the report.李先生指望他的秘书来准备报告。 4.break down 破坏、中断break down该词组有许多解释,字面解释为断裂可指机器车辆故障、计划、会谈失败或谈话中断。The negotiations broke down because neither side would compromise.谈判破裂,因为双方都不肯妥协。5.be laid-back (about) (对.)不严格的laid-back意思是轻松、自在,为俚语用法,这个词组形容对
22、某事的规定不严格。The dress code in many of Quanzhous mom-and-pop companies is laid-back.泉州许多家族式经营公司的对(员工)着装的规定并不严格。 5pull a fast one 欺骗、耍花招这词组可指逗趣地耍花招,也可指恶意的欺骗,全凭上下文而定。为美式俚语。The buyer pulled a fast one when he said he wanted a bigger discount, or no deal.买主说折扣要再打多些,否则免谈,其实只是在耍花招!6make time 赶快、赶紧意思是赶快、赶紧。相反词
23、take ones time表示慢慢来,不急。We have to make time if we want to meet the client on time.如果要准时见客户的话,一定要赶快。 7delegated authority 授权delegate为动词,授予。delegate authority to someone为常用之动词词组,是指授予某人决定权。delegated authority即源自此动词词组。Most executives that dont delegate real authority are insecure and inefficient.不敢授权的主管
24、大多是缺乏安全感又无效率。 8if you will 可以这么说这词组等于so to speak, in a manner of speaking;用于想以另一种说法表达意思时。如以下例说话者想用放长假(on a long vacation)这说法代替被辞退(get fired)时,就用if you will表示这种情形。Mr. Smith was sent on a long vacation, if you will.可以这么说,Smith先生放长假了。 9run some numbers by someone 向某人提出数额numbers在此是指有关财务的数额,这词组是说告诉某人己方所提
