文档简介

、There are several aspects of language and speaking that I would like to focus on today for considerations to allow you to improve moving forward.First, the area of pronunciation and delivery. Some of you, especially when you are nervous, should focus more on diction and pronunciation. Specifically,

、try not to swallow your articles like "a" and "the" or little connectors like "of" Take a breath, take your time. and let each word be sounded. Similarly, make sure you sound final consonants, especially the "-ed" in your past tenses. This is one of the things

、 that Chinese, even the good ones, the really good ones, when you start speaking quickly and passionately, forget. So, pay a lot of attention and be conscious that that's something that you may know that the grammars, grammatical and structural rules and not sound that final consonant or you may

、 be a little fuzzy on what the past tenses, but that some- thing that makes a big difference in a competition,Finally, in the area of pronunciation for all you students, not just the contestants here today, please, the word "the", th-: put your tongue between your teeth. It's not "

、;da," it's "the" it's not "der." it's "their" it's not "utter." it's "other." You can do this, you can do this, Practice on the way to class, practice in the shower, practice wherever but don't say "da," it'

、s "the."Second category of feedback is I want to talk very briefly about lexicon and vocabulary. As I mentioned, I felt that your use of lexicon in today's presentation was quite sophisticated and showed a lot of preparation. Most of you may have noticed that in the contemporaneous, sp

、ontaneous remarks and questions, the level of vocabulary came down a notch or two. That's very natural: some- thing that we all have to work on. But there were a couple of I think. there's three examples that I'd like to share with you to take home to work on. Number one, since the topic

、 was ecology, when you talk about living in harmony with da za ren, is it "the nature" or "nature'? Nature! I's not "the nature"! "The nature" is shenrna shenma dongxi de xingzhi, so, that was like one of those errors that. umm, came up because of the theme

、 of the speech, but that's something you can remember right now, "Live in harmony with.nature."' Second, some small things that I noted, some of you messed up "emphasized" with "emphasis"-it's a common mistake. And one of the contestants was talking about ho

、w important it was to be aware of the environment and that we should generate awareness of environment to help us think of ways to improve it, and she, I think it was she, said "we should get a consensus of the environment," I think she probably meant "sense." "get a sense o

、f the environment" as an awareness. So, little things like that. Be careful semantically. If you reach the upper levels of language, it's very easy to choose a wrong word and I guess my advice for you would be, "When in doubt, check a dictionary for nuance and proper usage." becau

、se when you're in the lower levels you're not using those fancy words. But when you get up in the upper levels, like today, they're very important. Finally, my last category of feedback for you is in the area of discourse and organization. This is very important in speaking contests, it&#

、39;s very important when you're translating at the upper levels, and it's important in adult life when you're working in the world of work where you're no longer talking simply about yourself and your family, but other things, issues. Today's contestants demonstrated a wide varie

、ty of rhetorical styles in their prepared speeches. Many of the candidates showed a sophisticated use of linguistic register, and register is, as you know. using language that is appropriate for a specific purpose for a specific social context. The reason l mention register is that for learners of E

、nglish as a second language, the higher the register, the more difficult it is to speak accurately, coherently, and persuasively. Right? So, today, one of the contestants made a very insightful remark and said, I quote, "The higher level of English I speak, the more mistakes I make." Remem

、ber that'? Actually. What she meant by this was that she was having trouble communicating sophisticated ideas and arguments in English without making errors in grammar or usage. University students learning English can improve their ability to speak naturally in high registers and high level of

、discourse and can sustain a high level of discourse by doing a few things and these are the three pieces of advice I will leave for you before I conclude my remarks. So, this is advice teachers and students for how to build that competency and high level of discourse.Number one: Read texts that repr

、esent a high level of discourse. Soak up that language. But, remember that written text has a discourse that is separate from spoken discourse. Some of you were speaking today in very. kind of written-prose language, and you may not want to do that in the future.Number two, piece of advice: Make a t

、ape recording of yourself talking about abstract topics or complex topics and then go back and listen to it and listen to how it sounds: if it's cohesive and coherent'? Are there errors? Then go back, practice again, and do it a second time like editing a written text but, in fact, it's

、a spoken text. You will hear what you're doing that could be improved, even you, and of course if you have teachers, that's even better, but you, yourself will hear. Finally, my last piece of advice for you is that you should practice building. If language, if spoken language, was like a hous

、e you should practice building the house brick by brick, storey by storey, so you all can do basic sentences now, clearly. And, most of you are pretty good at building paragraphs, but some of you are not yet perfect house builders in terms of discourse and organization. So you want to practice writi

、ng compound and complex sentences, and then weave those together into paragraphs and you'll weave those paragraphs into the full spoken text. Weave them together, push yourself to go for the discourse and woven nature so that not only the thought flows, but it's coherent. And. I think you

、9;ll agree with me, that some of the most compelling speeches that we heard today displayed this type coherence and sort of natural progression of ideas, lf you do that, there's no doubt in my mind that you can progress at this area.In conclusion, I would like to quote one of our question master

、s, who said today that, "Life is a journey, not the arrival." that you focus on the journey not the arrival. Language learning is lifelong. Lifelong. So, as you move forward, language learning enjoy the journey.评委总结发言(表达感谢时用):Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, excellent contestants, its

、really a great honor and pleasure to be here as a judge for this English feast of speech competition. I think all contestants did a great job today, and Id like to express my thanks to everyone who has made a great contribution to organizing the competition and has made it a fantastic success. So le

、ts give a big round of applause to all of them. I have been really enjoying this contest thoroughly, especially because all the contestants have approached the topic from different perspectives. All speeches have been well researched, with good thoughts as well as interesting ideas. I am very please

、d to see that most of you delivered your speech with good pronunciation, clear articulation, with good eye contact and a proper manner. Finally I would like to take this opportunity to offer you some little tips about public English speech competition.First, the area of pronunciation and delivery. S

、ome of you, especially when you are nervous, should focus more on diction and pronunciation. Specifically, try not to swallow your articles like "a" and "the" or little connectors like "of" Take a breath, take your time. and let each word be sounded. Similarly, make sur

、e you sound final consonants, especially the "-ed" in your past tenses. This is one of the things that Chinese, even the good ones, the really good ones, when you start speaking quickly and passionately, forget. So, what I here want to suggest to those contestants, when you preparing your

、speech, whatever the prepared speech and the impromptu speech, do not just focus on the whole picture of your work, instead pay a attention to the small details, as well as the intonation. On top of that, I would like to speak with those who always get somewhat a little bit nervous once they stand on

、 the stage to deliver a public speech. Speaking of this, I would like to share with you a little bit about myself. When I was at my high school and I often blushed on my face when I stand even in the front our class, let alone the city competition later on. And one of my foreign teachers give my som

、e tips. Thats what I want to share with you right now. when you feel nervous, especially before get on the stage, take a deep breath and tell yourself in your heart that I am the best in the whole universe. Then, by the time you speak, what you should bear in mind is that dont ever get direct contac

、t with same part area of audience all the time. Remember you are here to serve the whole listeners with your point of view, so change your eyesight to different audience. I always like to say that ”Lifeis a journey”. Language learning is a life long experience and we never finish learning, especiall

、y for the English language which is so alive and ever changing. So as you move forward with your language learning make sure you enjoy every moment of your journey. 面对标新立异选手:You really have been very creative in trying to clear out your point. But this time, it was very clearly stated what would be

、required of you in the speech. Therefore, it is very important to understand what is required of you and what is demanded of you in a competition. 面对跑题选手(或主题不明确选手)In todays competition, I think you are a little too hasty in your preparation for the speech. For instance, as your topic is “a word that

、 changes the world” ,you d better show your point out straightly. Otherwise how could you grab the audiences attention to your speech. So next time, you just read carefully about the instructions before you start making a speech. And try to understand every word clearly and correctly. 对不能及时切入主题的选手:

、I think the basic rules of communication are universal, and apply across languages and cultures. Say what you mean, and say it in as clear, direct, and simple a manner as possible. And when you are talking or writing to someone from a different country, dont be afraid to say the obvious thing first.

、 面对发音不好的选手:I have to mention in this competition that you still need to improve your pronunciatione specially rhythm and sentence stress. You need to improve your vowels. It is still very important. I think thats all I want to say. Thank you very much for your speech. 对表现好的选手I am very much impressed

、by the speech you have made. To compare with the speech of others, you really did a great job. I feel good about this. First of all, in your prepared speech, you are more to the point and your English is more natural. Secondly, your point is very impressive. And you provide a lot of examples to supp

、ort your speech. 对即兴演讲的评论:Talking about your impromptu speech, I think you are quite sensitive to answer questions.Your answer is quite logical and I like it. 对眼神交流/肢体语言把握好的选手:It's worth metioning that you give us a fantastic speech with an impressive beginning, ending or the free talk. Furtherm

、ore, you are enthusiastic throughout the speech. You made good eye contact with the audience and used appropriate body language in the speech. .You made your speech more wonderful and more perfect with your body language. You looked cool! 适时对选手提出的建议:We all know a language is a means and the purpose

、is communication. What really matters is the courage to come and participate in the contest. I should learn from all of you. However, there are still some problems and much room for improvement. I am going to put forward some suggestions on how to do better in the future. Have you thought about this

、 question: When you prepare a speech, there is something more important than language. What is it? It is idea. Ideas come before the language. If you dont know what to say, if you have no ideas, what is the use of the language? So, you must think, and think again and decide what you want to say and

、then organize your ideas. One point I want to emphasize is that you should have your own approach, your own original ideas. If you only borrow things from others or copy things from some ready materials or textbooks, your speech is bound to fail. In this contest we hear some expressions again and ag

、ain. Then, we know you have been borrowing things from the same source. To quote from one of the topics for impromptu speech: “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” This is a quotation from Einstein. If we want the world to move forward, we need imagination, and we need creativity. 对即兴演讲的建议

、:When you prepare your impromptu speech, the most important thing is to be clear about the topic you have chosen. If you miss the point, however fluent and expressive you are, you get a poor mark. For example, there is a topic: To err is human; to forgive is divine. When you choose this topic, you s

、hould know it means everybody makes mistakes, but if you are able to forgive other peoples mistakes, then you are a better being. The emphasis is the second half. If you only talk about how to do your best to correct your mistakes, you miss the point. I feel this part is the most difficult part of t

、he contest. You have to be quick for you dont have much time to prepare; you have to be knowledgeable for you must understand the meaning of the topic properly. 对选手提出更高要求:So, you must have realized the contest has become more demanding,. You need to have something more creative. And next year, you w

、ould be expected to be at a new and higher stage. I am sure everyone would like to join with me in saying that the Organizing Committee has chosen a very good theme for the prepared speech, that is, “Does one plus one equal two?” which is very thought provoking and leaves plenty of room for your ima

、gination. As I said at the very beginning, we have been enjoying the contest thoroughly and tremendously because, the 92 contestants approached the theme from different perspectives, well researched, with good thoughts as well as interesting ideas. And we are very pleased to see, most of you deliver

、ed your speech with good pronunciation, clear articulation, with good eye contact and a proper manner. You have also demonstrated your remarkable analytical ability. But there is one thing I would like to mention. With a little bit more sense of humor, you might have entertained your audience more。O

、ne thing that impresses us most is that some of you are very fluent speakers of English. But one point that Id like to make is, fluency doesnt mean haste. Some of you spoke very fast, or too fast, that the speaker himself got carried away; but the audience got lost. Weve also noticed some small pron

、unciation problems, such as, we heard some contestants say, /tek'nld/, /'end/, instead of /tek'nldI/, /'endI/ for “technology” and “energy”. And we heard some say /'taInr/, /'k:nr/, instead of /'taIn/, /'k:n/. I havent got time to check with my American friends yet if

、 they would identify that with the American accent. I very much doubt it。Compared with the prepared speech, generally speaking, your performance was somewhat weaker in your impromptu speech. Its not surprising, because that is a very tough and challenging task and you are only given 15 minutes to ge

、t yourself prepared to talk about a given topic. I must say all those topics for the impromptu speech are very well-designed, though some of them are more straightforward, while others do need a bit more hard thinking。Quite a number of you were given quotations. So, when you face those quotations, I

、m afraid you have to interpret it and to get the message of it first. And then you put your understanding and your arguments into a logical order and deliver it to inform or to persuade the audience。Here I would like to pick up two of them to help drive my point home. Look at this one, which is a qu

、otation from Alvin Toffler. It reads, “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn。” What does it mean? What message does the writer intend to get across? I wonder if you have heard of this phrase “lifelong learning

、”. Have you? Please put up your hand if you have. Oh, thats good. Then you have the basic knowledge to interpret this quotation. Why 21st century? Because in this century, the world is changing fast. Ones learning no longer ends up with the completion of ones schooling time, and ones learning should

、 go on throughout ones whole life. One of the aims of education in college should be to make the students learn how to learn. And then when you step into this fast changing world, youll be able to carry on learning to face and adapt to the ever-lasting changes. You will know how to learn to catch up

、, to update and to enrich yourself. Therefore, if you didnt have this knowledge, if you didnt know this new concept in education, it would be difficult for you to interpret “learn, unlearn, and relearn” from the quotation。And lets look at the other one. “We reached the Moon and come back, but we find it t
