、;多种多样9. in existence 存在,生存10. oncogene (致)癌基因11. activate 激活,使活动(形容词active)12. dormant暂停活动的;潜在的;睡着的(同根词dormitory宿舍-dorm睡觉)13. drive into action 使活动起来,迫使行动14. turn off 关闭,使停止活动15. involved相关的,涉及的16. mysterious 神秘的(名词mystery 神秘事物)17. likelihood 可能性(形容词likely 可能的)18. initiate 开始,发起(同根词initiative 主动的行动;

1. “But”, he cautions, “some people may have the idea that once one u

、nderstands the causes, the cure will rapidly follow. Consider Pasteur, he discovered the causes of many kinds of infections, but it was fifty or sixty years before cures were available.”结构分析这是一个直接引语,包含两个部分,其中第一个句子的主干是some people may have the idea,后面的that引导一个同位语从句that once one understands the causes,

、 the cure will rapidly follow,修饰the idea;第二个句子是一个例子,说明前一句中some people的错误观点。 2. The researchers made great progress in the early 1970s, when they discovered that oncogenes, which are cancer-causing genes, are inacti

、ve in normal cells. The researchers made great progress in the early 1970s,第一个逗号之后的when引导一个定语从句when they discovered,修饰the early 1970s;discovered后面是that引导的一个宾语从句that oncogenes are inactive in normal cells,这个宾语从句中的which are cancer-causing genes是一个非限定性定语从句,修饰oncogenes,解释oncogenes的含义。

3. Anything from cosmic rays to radiation to diet may activate a dormant oncogene, but how remains unknown.结构分析本句是一个复合句,前半句的主语是Anything,后面的介词结构from cosmic rays to radiation to diet说明主语所包括的范围;后半句是一个省略句,补充完整是but how they may activate a dormant oncogene remain

、s unknown。 4. The exact mechanisms involved are still mysterious, but the likelihood that many cancers are initiated at the level of genes suggests that we will never prevent cancers.

、ned(有关的);后半句的主干是the likelihood .suggests that., 其中主语the likelihood(可能性)后带有同位语从句that many cancers are initiated at the level of genes,而谓语suggests后带有that引导的一个宾语从句。

、tions, “some people have the idea that once one understands the causes, the cure will rapidly follow),也就是说there is still a long way to go(前面要走的路还很长)。
