UnderstandingAncientMesoamericanStartingat oftheeighteenthcenturyandcontinuinguptothepresent,explorershavesearchedfortheruinsofancientMesoamerica,aregionthatincludesCentralAmericaandcentralandsouthernMexico.Withtheprogressoftime,archaeologistshaveunearthedcivilizationsincreasinglyremoteinage.Itisasifwitheachnewcenturyinthemoderneraanearlierstratumofantiquityhasbeenrevealed.Nineteenth-centuryexplorers,particularlyJohnLloydStephensandFrederickCatherwood,cameuponMayacitiesinthejungle,aswellasevidenceofotherClassiccultures.Twentieth-centuryresearchrevealedamuchearlierhighcivilization,theOlmec.ItnowscarcelyseemspossiblethatthefrontiersofearlyMesoamericancivilizationcanbepushedbackanyfurther,althoughnewwork—suchasinOaxaca,southernMexico—willcontinuetofillindetailsoftheTheprocessofdiscoveryoftenshswhatweknowaboutthehistoryofMesoamericanart.Newfindsarejustasoftenmadeaccidentallyasintentionally.In1971workersinstallingsoundandlightequipmentunderthePyramidoftheSunatTeotihuacanstumbleduponaremarkablecavethathassincebeeninterpretedbysomescholarsasaroyalburialchamber.Archaeologyhasitsownfashionstoo:theisolationofnewsitesmaybetheprimegoalinonedecadeandtheexcavationofpyramidsthefocusinthenext.Inathirddecade,outlyingstructuresratherthanprincipalbuildingsmayabsorbarchaeologists’energies.Norshouldonefetthatexcavatorsarevulnerabletolocalinterests.Atonepoint,reconstructionofpyramidstoattracttourismmaybedesired;atanother,archaeologistsmaybeprecludedfromworkingatwhathasalready
