ZhouEnlai(ChouEn-lai),thesonofwealthyparents,wasborninJiangsu,China,in1898.HewaseducatedinamissionarycollegeinTianjinbeforestudyingatauniversityinJapan.HemovedtoFrancein1920wherehehelpedtoformtheoverseasbranchoftheChineseCommunistParty.HealsolivedinBritainandGermanybeforereturningtoChinain1924.
AsmembersoftheCommunistPartyMaoZedong,ZhuDeandZhouEnlaiadaptedtheideasofLeninwhohadsuccessfullyachievedarevolutioninRussiain1917.TheyarguedthatinAsiaitwasimportanttoconcentrateonthecountrysideratherthanthetowns,inordertocreatearevolutionaryelite.
ZhouEnlai(ChouEnZhouEnlaiwasthemostpopularleaderinChinaduringthe20thcentury.EvenamongthemadnessduringtheCulturalRevolution,hecontinuedtomakeanefforttopursuedemocratic(民主的)ideas,whileatthesametimesupportingleaderslikeMao.ZhouEnlaiwasthemostpopulaHeexercisedhisdiplomaticskilltoopenChinaratherthanisolateitfromtherestoftheworld.Inturn,hebroughtChinaintoaperiodofstableeconomicvitality,andmanynationsthroughouttheworldcheered,astheycouldnowtradetheirgoodsandservices.HeexercisedhisdiplomaticsThedespairandpovertybroughtthefamilytonewlows.Zhouoftenworkedthefieldstosecurefoodforhisfamily.In1910,whenhewastenyearsold,heleftHuaianandwenttoManchuria.Hestudiedacademicsthere,andhadexcellentgradesmostofthetime.Inthosedays,helearnedpolitics,whichhadadeepimpactonhislife.Whenhewasfifteenyearsold,hebeganmiddleschoolinTianjin.Duringhisfour-yearstaytherehesurroundedhimselfinbooks,sports,andpoliticalmovements.Fromages17to19,hestudiedatJapan.ThedespairandpovertybroughAfterhisrelease,in1920,hewenttoFrance.In1921knowingthattheCCP(ChineseCommunistParty)wasestablishedinShanghai,hebecameamember.DuringhisstudyinFrancein1922,heestablishedtheChineseCommunist'sYouthGroup.Afterthat,hestudiedinEnglandforseveralmonths,andthenwenttoGermanytostudy.In1924,hereturnedtoChina,andheservedanimportantwiththeCCP.Afterhisrelease,in1920,heIn1926hedirectedageneralstrikeinShanghaiwhichwasoccupiedbytheKuomintang(NationalistArmy),(中国国民党)buttheuprisingendedinultimatefailure.AfterthisfailurehereturnedtoShanghaiwiththerestoftheCCP.In1926hedirectedageneralHeheldprominentmilitaryandpoliticalpostsintheCommunistparty,andfrom1935to1936,heparticipatedinthelongmarch.DuringtheCommunist-Kuomintangrapprochementfrom1936to1946,hemovedasthechiefCommunistliaisonHeheldprominentmilitaryandAndwhenthePeople'sRepublicofChinawasestablishedin1949,hebecamepremierandforeignminister.HetookpartintheGenevaConferenceof1954andtheBandungConferenceof1955;aplacewhereheexercisedhisexcellentdiplomaticskills.AndwhenthePeople'sRepublicIn1958heresignedasforeignminister,butretainedhistitleasPremiere.Asapracticalperson,ZhoumaintainedhispositionthroughoutallofCommunistChina'sideological(意识形态的)upheavals,includingtheGreatLeapForwardof1958,andsubsequently
theCulturalRevolution.HemadeanefforttoreleasecomradesimprisonedduringtheCulturalRevolution,andasaresulthewascriticizedbyJiangQingandRedGuards.Beforehebecameill,intheearly1970shewaslargelyresponsibleforChina'srestablishingcontactwiththeWest.AndonJanuary8,1976,whenhewasseventy-eightyearsold,hedied.In1958heresignedasforeignHisunhappychildhoodhadagreatimpactonhislife.Hissensitiveness,excessivebehavior,andunbelievablecontributionstoworkmighthavestemmedfromhischildhood.Becausehehadpoliticaltoughness(韧性)andunderstoodwesternpower,hewasasoleleaderinreformingChina.HisunhappychildhoodhadagrHealwayschosethepositiveoverthenegative,andcalledonthepeopletouniteandcooperate.Intheend,manymournedhisdeath,astheylostnotonlyaleader,butalsoabrother,andasymbolicfather.HealwayschosethepositiveAfterhisdeath,onemillionfivehundredthousandpeoplecametoseehiscoffin,andmemorialsforhimwereheldeverywhere.OneofthememorialreportsdevotedtoZhouEnlaiwrote:"Helookstohaveleftnothingforus.But...hehavehundredsmillionsofchildrenandgrandchildren,andallthelandofChinaisgraveforhim".Afterhisdeath,onemillionEnlaicontributedtoChina'smodernizationandinternationalization.InJune1953,hemadefivedeclarations
forpeaceinthetalkswithNehru.尼赫鲁
ThisdeclarationmadeChinaopen,andnotisolated(隔离),fromtheotherAsiancountries.HeservedasthediplomaticleadershipforInternationalCommunismattheGenevaConferencein1953.EnlaicontributedtoChina'smAttheBandungConferenceof1955,hemaintainedtherighttopossessTaiwananddemandedtheapprovalofChina,forinthosedaysthecountrycalledChinanowwascalledCCP.Hissophisticated
diplomaticskillbroughtalotofprofittoChina.Hewasdrawnbackfromthepoliticalfrontlinesintheearlyhalfof1960sbecausehecontradictedtheGreatLeapForward.AttheBandungConferenceof1ButduringtheCulturalRevolutionhemadeagreatefforttosavecomradesbeingpersecutedorimprisoned.Intheearlyof1970s,heservedaprominentpostintheparty.Hesuggestedpoliciesincludinghis"FourModernization"(四个现代化)toreconstructChinahavingbeendestroyedandconfusedbytheCulturalRevolution.ButduringtheCulturalRevolu1、联合国前秘书长哈马啥尔德于1955年在北京会见过周总理后说过一句广为流传的话:“与周恩来相比,我们简直就是野蛮人。”
