Atfirst,wekeptarapidpaceandrannonstop.Atthispace,wefinishedthefirst20kilometersin2hoursandIthoughtrunningamarathonwasapieceofcake.Thenmyrunningmatebegantoslowdown.Iurgedhimtokeeprunningatthesamepacebuthesaidno,hewantedtoconservehisenergy.IfeltIhadpartneredwiththewrongperson,therefore,Isprintedonandlefthimbehindinthedust.

Afewkilometerslater,Ibegantounderstandhisstrategyasmypaceslowedtoajogthenawalk.AfterthatIwasincapableofmovinganotherstep.Iwashumiliatedasmoreandmorepeopleranpassedme.MorethanonceIthought"MaybeIshouldquit."Istartedtodoubtmyabilitytofinishthisrace.

Atthismoment,myrunningmatecaughtupwithmeandslappedmeontheback.“Followme,”heshouted.Hehadbalancedhismarathonpaceandwasencouragedmetodothesame.Fortherestofthisgruelingcontest,wewalked,jogged,ranafewmiles,andwalkedagain.Slowly,painfullybuthopefullythistime,weestablishedthemostsuitablepacewithinthenaturalflowofourphysicalcapabilities.

EventuallyweaccomplishedourfirstMarathonof42kilometersin4andhalfhours.Iaskedmyself,whatdidthismarathonmeantome?MyMarathonexperiencebecameaninfluentialmetaphorformylifeabouthowwemustlearntopaceourselvesineverything,bybeingintunewiththerhythmoflife.

Likethetidethatebbsandflows,wemustlistentoadvicebutmakeourowndecisions.Liketheshowatdawnanddusk,wemustlearntobalanceprideandmodesty.Andfromthewaythewindcanbothshoutandwhisper,wemustlearnwhentobestrongandwhentobegentle,foreverythingmovesinitsownrhythmanditsownyinandyangelements.Itistheinteractionofthesecomplementaryextremesthatproducesharmony,asLaozisaid,extremesmeet.Sincethemarathon,thisnotionoftwooppositeforcesworkingtogetherhasbeenmyrunningpartner,sotospeak.Yinandyangexisteverywhere,constantlyinteracting,andneverexistinginanabsolutecondition.
