AdamSmith(16June1723–17July1790)wasaScottisheconomist,philosopher,andauthor.Hewasamoralphilosopher,apioneerofpoliticaleconomy,andwasakeyfigureduringtheScottishEnlightenmentera.Heisbestknownfortwoclassicworks:TheTheoryofMoralSentiments(1759),andAnInquiryintotheNatureandCausesoftheWealthofNations(1776).Thelatter,usuallyabbreviatedasTheWealthofNations,isconsideredhismagnumopusandthefirstmodernworkofeconomics.

Smithlaidthefoundationsofclassicalfreemarketeconomictheory.TheWealthofNationswasaprecursortothemodernacademicdisciplineofeconomics.Inthisandotherworks,hedevelopedtheconceptofdivisionoflabour,andexpoundeduponhowrationalself-interestandcompetitioncanleadtoeconomicprosperity.AdamSmith
