MaikaElanMaikaElandidn’tknowwhattoexpectin2010whensheknockedondoorsatapopularhotelforgayandlesbiancouplesinSiemReap,CambodiawhereshehadtraveledtotakeaworkshopwiththephotographerAntoine.Maikawassurprisedwhenmostoftheguests–manyofwhomwereforeigners–toldhershewaswelcometotaketheirportraits.Vietnamhashistoricallybeenunwelcomingtosame-sexrelationships.ButitsCommunistgovernmentisconsideringrecognizingsame-sexmarriage–amovethatwouldmakeitthefirstAsiancountrytodoso,despitepasthumanrightsissuesandalong-standingstigma.InAugust2012,thecountry’sfirstpublicgayprideparadetookplaceinHanoi.Atthebeginning,manyofthoseMaikaphotographedwereuncomfortable,“Theyweretouchingortheywerecaring”,Maikasaid.“Butit’snotnatural.It’sacting.”Mosttooksometimetowarmuptoher.Butafterbeingaroundsubjectsforafewdays,shegotasenseoftheirroutinesathome.Infact,theideaofhomebecameintegraltothework.Shesoughtprivatemoments–wherehersubjectswouldbefreefromstaresandcriticism,andlessinclinedtodramatizetheirrelationship.MomentwhentheyforgotMaikawasthere.TEST
