TheLetter“A”

1Iwasnowfive,andstillIshowednorealsignofintelligence,Ishowednoapparentinterestinthingsexceptformytoes–moreespeciallythoseonmyleftfoot.Iusedtolieonmybackallthetimeinthekitchenor,onbrightwarmdays,outinthegarden,surroundedbyafamilythatlovedmeandhopedformeandthatmademepartofit.Iwaslonely,imprisonedinaworldofmyown,unabletocommunicatewithothers,cutoff,separatedfromthemasthoughaglasswallstoodbetweenmyexistenceandtheirs,Ilongedtorunaboutandplaywiththerest,butIwasunabletobreakloosefrommyimprisonment.

2Thensuddenly,ithappened!Inamomenteverythingwaschanged,myfuturelifetookadefiniteshape,mymother'sfaithinmerewarded,andhersecretfearchangedintoopentriumph.

(1)takeshape成形

Theorganizationbegantotakeshape.

Theplanisbeginningtotakeshapeinmymind.

Aftermonthsofwork,thenewbookisgraduallytakingshape.

(2)havefaithin对…..有信念

IhadfaithinLaoZhang.Iknewhewouldtakecareofme.

Ihaven'tmuchfaithinthismedicine.

(3)berewarded

Thewinnerswererewardedwithgiftsoffruitandflowers.

Peopleshouldberewardedforspecialeffort.

3Ithappenedsoquickly,sosimplyafteralltheyearsofwaitinganduncertainty,thatIcanseeandfeelthewholesceneasifithadhappenedlastweek.Itwastheafternoonofacold,greyDecemberday.Itwassnowing.Thestreetsoutsidewereallcoveredwithsnow.

4Inside,allthefamilyweregatheredroundthebigkitchenfirethatlitupthelittleroomwithawarmglowandmadegiantshadowsdanceonthewallsandceiling.

5InacornerMona,mysister,andPaddy,mybrother,weresittingtogether.Theywerewritingdownlittlesumsontoanoldslate,usingapieceofyellowchalk,Iwasclosetothem,proppedupbyafewpillowsagainstthewall,watching.

6Itwasthechalkthatattractedmesomuch.Itwasalong,slenderstickofvividyellow.Ihadneverseenanythinglikeitbefore,andIwasfascinatedbyitasmuchasifithadbeenastickofgold.

7Suddenly,Iwanteddesperatelytodowhatmysisterwasdoing.Then–withoutthinkingorknowingexactlywhatIwasdoing,Ireachedoutandtookthestickofchalkoutofmysister'shand-withmyleftfoot.

8IdonotknowwhyIusedmyleftfoottodothis.Itisapuzzletomanypeopleaswellastomyself,for,althoughIhadshownacuriousinterestinmytoesatanearlyage,Ihadneverattemptedbeforethistouseeitherofmyfeetinanyway,Theycouldhavebeenasuselesstomeasweremyhands,Thatday,however,myleftfootreachedoutandveryimpolitelytookthechalkoutofmysister'shand.

9Iheldittightlybetweenmytoes,and,actingonanimpulse,madeawildsortofscribblewithitontheslate.NextmomentIstopped,abitdazed,surprised,lookingdownatthestickofyellowchalkstuckbetweenmytoes,notknowingwhattodowithitnext,hardlyknowinghowitgotthere.ThenIlookedupandbecameawarethateveryonehadstoppedtalking,andwasstaringatmesilently.Nobodystirred.

10Mymothercamein.Shestoppedmidwaybetweenthetableandthefire,feelingthetensionflowingthroughtheroom.Shefollowedtheirstareandsawmeinthecorner,Hereyeslookedfrommyfacedowntomyfoot,withthechalkgrippedbetweenmytoes.

11Thenshecrossedovertomeandkneltdownbesideme,asshehaddonesomanytimesbefore.

12“I'llshowyouwhattodowithit,Chris,”shesaid,veryslowlyandinaqueer,chokedway.

13TakinganotherpieceofchalkfromMona,shehesitated,thenverydeliberatelydrew,onthefloorinfrontofme,thesingleletter“A”.

14“Copythat,”shesaid,lookingsteadilyatme.“Copyit,Christy.”

15Icouldn't.

16Ilookedaroundatthefacesthatwereturnedtowardsme,tense,excitedfacesthatwereatthatmomentfrozen,immobile,eager,waitingforamiracle.

17Thestillnesswasprofound,Icouldhearthesoundofthewatertapdripping,theloudtickingoftheclock,andthesofthissandcrackleofthelogsontheopenfire.

18Itriedagain,Iputoutmyfootandmadeawildstabwiththechalkwhichproducedaverycrookedlineandnothingmore,Motherheldtheslatesteadyforme.

19“Tryagain,Chris,”shewhisperedinmyear.“Again.”

20Idid.Istiffenedmybodyandputmyleftfootoutagain,forthethirdtime.ThenthestickofchalkbrokeandIwasleftwithastump.Iwantedtothrowitawayandgiveup.ThenIfeltmymother'shandonmyshoulder.Itriedoncemore,Outwentmyfoot.Ishook,Isweatedandtriedmybest.Myhandsweresotightlyclenchedthatmyfingernailsbitintotheflesh.IsetmyteethsohardthatInearlypiercedmylowerlip.But–Idrewit–theletter“A.”Thereitwasontheslatebeforeme.Shaky,withawkwardsidesandaveryunevencenterline.Butitwasthelitter“A.”Ilookedup.Isawmymother'sfaceforamoment,tearsonhercheeks.Thenmyfatherstoopedandputmeontohisshoulder.

21Ihaddoneit!Ithadstarted–thethingthatwastogivemyminditschanceofexpressingitself.True,Icouldn'tspeakwithmylips.ButnowIwouldspeakthroughsomethingmorelastingthanspokenwords–writtenwords.

22Thatoneletter,scrawledontheslatewithabrokenbitofyellowchalkgrippedbetweenmytoes,wasmyroadtoanewworld,mykeytomentalfreedom.
