TodayI'dliketotalkaboutsomeoftheproblemsthatstudentsfacewhentheyfollowacourceofstudythroughthemediumofEnglish--ifEnglishisnottheirmothertongue.Theproblemscanbedividedintothreebroadcategories:psychological,culturalandlinguistic.ThefirsttwocategoriesmainlyaffectthosewhocometostudyinBritainfromAsiaandAfrica.I'llcometocommentonlybriefyonthesetwocategoriesandthenspendmostofthetimelookingatlinguisticdifficultieswhichapplytoeveryone.someofthecommonpsychologicalproblemsreallyinvolvefearofunknown:forexample,whetherone'sacademicstudieswillbetoodifficult.Lookingattheculturalproblems,wecanseethatsomeofthemareverypracticalnature,forexample,arrangingsatisfactoryaccommodation.Othersarelesseasytodefine.Thelargestcategoryseemstobelinguistic.let'slookatthisinsomedetails.Moststudents,intheirowncountries,willhavelittleopportunitytopractiseusingEnglish.WhenforeignlearnersfirsthavetheopportunitytospeaktoanEnglish-speakingpersonthenmayhaveashock"theyoftenhavegreatdifficultyinunderstanding!I'lljustmentionthreeofthepossiblereasonsforthis.
