Duringtheten-yearperiodbetween1994and2004,theFDAapproved321completelynewdrugs(thisdoesn'tincludeapprovalsforchangestoexistingmedicines),bringingthetotaltomorethan10,000drugproductsonthemarket.Duringthatsameperiod,eightdrugswerewithdrawnforreasonsofsafety,suchasthedietdrugfenfluramine(fen-phen,associatedwithheart-valvedisease)andtheallergydrugSeldane(linkedtoheartarrhythmias).ButtheVioxxrecallcreatedashockwavefortheAmericanconsumerlikenoother.Manypeoplehadcometodependontheir"meds",andtheyexpectedthemtobesafe,too,especiallywhentheycostsomuch.Prescriptiondrugsaccountfor,someSay,thefastestgrowingsegment(aboutone-tenth)ofallhealthexpenditures,withsomespecialtydrugscostinghundredsofdollarsperdose.
