years,therateofdivorceintheUnitedStateshasexploded:almost50%of
marriagesendindivorcenow,andtheevidencesuggestsitisgoingtoget

accordingtoaspokespersonfortheNationalFamilyAssociation.Some
futuristspredictthatin100years,theaverageAmericanwillmarryatleast
fourtimes,andextramaritalaffairswillbeevenmorecommonthantheyare
now.
Butwhatarethereasonsforthis,andisthepicturereallysogloomy?The
answertothefirstquestionisreallyquitesimple:marriageisnolongerthe
necessityitoncewas.Theinstitutionofmarriagehasbeenbasedforyears
partlyoneconomicneed.Womenusedtobeeconomicallydependentontheir
husbandsastheyusuallydidn'thavejobsoutsidethehome.Butwiththe
risingnumberofwomeninwell-payingjobs,thisisnolongerthecase,so
theydon'tfeelthattheyneedtostayinafailingmarriage.
Inanswertothesecondquestion,theoutlookmaynotbeaspessimisticas
itseems.Whiletherateofdivorcehasrisen,therateofcouplesmarrying
hasneveractuallyfallenverymuch,somarriageisstillquitepopular.In
additiontothis,manycouplesnowcohabitanddon'tbothertomarry.These
couplesareeffectivelymarried,buttheydonotappearineitherthemarriage
ordivorcestatistics.Infact,morethan50%offirstmarriagessurvive.The

Theformerfeelthatmultitaskingwithelectronicgadgetsbychildrenaffects
laterdevelopmentofstudyskills,resultinginadeclineinthequalityof

Theyfeelthatmanyundergraduatesnowurgentlyneedremedialhelpwithstudy
