Howhurricanesform

Oceanscanbecomewarmenoughinthesummerforhurricanestodevelop,andtheoceansalsoretainsummerheatthroughthefall.Asaresult,thehurricaneseasonintheAtlanticBasin,whichcomprisestheAtlanticOcean,CaribbeanSea,andtheGulfofMexico,runsfromJune1throughNovember30.Atleast25out-of-seasonstorms,however,haveoccurredfrom1887through2003,and9ofthesestrengthenedintohurricanesforatleastafewhours.

Hurricanesweakenanddieoutwhencutofffromwarm,humidairastheymoveovercoolerwaterorlandbutcanremaindangerousastheyweaken.Hurricanesandothertropicalcyclonesbeginasdisorganizedclustersofshowersandthunderstorms.Whenoneoftheseclustersbecomesorganizedwithitswindsmakingacompletecirclearoundacenter,itiscalledatropicaldepression(热带低气压)

Whenadepression'ssustainedwindsreach63km/hormore,itbecomesatropicalstormandisgivenaname.Bydefinition,atropicalstormbecomesahurricanewhenwindsreach119km/hormore.

Foratropicaldepressiontogrowintoahurricane,windsfromjustabovethesurfaceoftheoceantomorethan12,000minaltitudemustbeblowingfromroughlythesamedirectionandatthesamespeed.Windsthatblowinoppositedirectionscreatewindshear--differentwindspeedsordirectionatupperandloweraltitudes(海拔)--thatcanpreventastormfromgrowing.

Characteristicsofhurricanes

Ahurricaneconsistsofbandsofthunderstormsthatspiral(盘旋)towardthelow-pressurecenter,or"eye"ofthestorm.Windsalsospiralintowardthecenter,speedingupastheyapproachtheeye.Largethunderstormscreatean"eyewall"aroundthecenterwherewindsarethestrongest.Windsintheeyeitselfarenearlycalm,andtheskyisoftenclear.Airpressuresintheeyeatthesurfacerangefromaround982hectopascals(百帕)inaweakhurricanetolowerthan914hectopascalsinthestrongeststorms.
