Thetheorypost-colonialismissuitabletoanalyzeWinston’shumanismandthefollowingcontentwillconcentrateontheanalysisofthedestructionandmaintenanceofWinston’shumanisminlinewiththistheory.

4.DestructionofWinston’sHumanism

TheprotagonistWinstonSmithinthisnovelwasa39-year-old,smallandweakman.HisdailyworkintheMinistryofTruthisrewritingthenewspaperandhistorysothespeechofthepartywoundbemoreauthoritativetothepublic.InthestateofOceania,people’sphysicalandspiritualactivitiesareallinthejurisdictionofthegovernment.Anyprivacyofpeopleisnotprotected.OrwellcreatedapersoncalledWinston,hepossessedveryconflictingfeelingstohisgovernmentandParty.Ononehand,hewasdissatisfiedwiththeautocraticgovernance.Ontheotherhand,hecouldn’tresistagainstautocracyinthesocietywithhislimitedthoughtsandabilities.Allofhislanguagesandthoughtsreflectthecontradictorypsychologyofthepeopleinthepostcolonialperiod.Theyareunderthereignofthetotalitariangovernment,sufferinggreatlyformthetyrannyofthegovernment.

Inordertoresistthisrepression,Winstondecidedtowritehisrealthoughtsintohisdairy.However,thisbehaviorwasillegalinthetotalitariansociety.Itreflectedthelanguagecontrolofthegovernment.Lateron,hefellinlovewithhisfemalefellowJulia,andhebegantohavingdateswithherbutthebeautifulfeelingwasendedbytheThoughtPolice,itreflectedtheextremesuppressionofpeople’semotion.AfterWinstonwasarrestedbythepolice,hewassentintotheRoom101andsufferedfromthemostrigoroustortureandeventuallyhegaveupallofhisresistancetothesocietyandabandonedallofhisbeautifulaspirationforlife,hewasrebuiltbythegovernmentandsubmittedtotheruleofBigBrotheragain.AlloftheseexperiencesofWinstonreflectedtheculturehegemonyandpowerisknowledgeunderthetotalitariansociety.

ThisthesiswilldiscussthedestructionofWinston’shumanismfromthefollowingthreeareas,namelytheextremesuppressionoflanguagesandemotionsandthoroughkillofWinston’shumanism.

4.1ExtremeSuppressionofLanguages

Asatoolofexpressingthoughts,languageisaveryimportantautocratictotalitariantoolintheeyesofBigBrotherofOceaniain1984.Throughcontrollingthelanguagestructureandcontent,BigBrotherletthepublicknowvariousinformationoftotalitarianism,includingwhatislegalorillegalbehavior,whatisallowedornotallowed.Somerulesareveryridiculous,peoplecan'tgoagainsttheserulesandtheyevendon’tneedtoknowwhytheserulesaresetlikethat,theyonlyneedtofollowtherules.However,asaspectator,it'seasytoseethattheserulesaresettomaintaintheruleofauthoritarianismoftheBigBrother.Languagecannotbemasteredbythesubjectsofthetotalitarian,oncetheyhavemasteredthelanguage,theyarelikelytogetridofthiskindofsuppressiononhumannatureandtheirideas.

OrwellcreatedadepartmentcalledtheMinistryofTruthin1984,theworkplaceofthenovel’sprotagonistWinston.TheMinistryofTruthisessentiallyadepartmentthatwillmuzzletheideologyofthecountryandthepeople'sthoughts,andthedepartmentofrecordingtruth,theonethatwillconstantlyrewriteandcounterfeithistoryaccordingtotherequirementsoftheinnerpartyleaderslikeBigBrother.Itisevidentthattotalitarianistheautocracythattransformedthelanguageintoatoolofcontrollingpeople'svalues.Andatthesametime,thehumannatureofthemembersthatimplementingthesetasksintheMinistryofTruthbecamedistorted.Theyareaccustomedofcheat,hypocrisy,theylackofthecouragetopursuethetruth.

AsthetopleaderoftherulinggroupoftheinnerpartyinOceania,BigBrotherisarepresentativeoftheauthoritarianrulers.HisimageispostedineachandeverycityofOceaniasoastoconveytheimportantinstructionsandinformationtothepeopleofOceania.Therefore,thepeopleofOceania,canonlyworshipBigBrother,andthey’reunabletocontrolsuchanemotion.Meanwhile,thefamilyaffectionisnotallowed.BigBrothersetsupjuvenilereconnaissanceteamtomonitortheirparents'wordsanddeedsintheirownfamilies.Oncethereisdeviationbetweenthesetstandardandtheirparents'wordsanddeeds,theseteenagerswillreporttoBigBrother.Theseteenagersaremanipulatedsincethey’remuchyoungerandtheywilllosethefeelingofaffection.Oceaniaregimeisalsoobjectedtoallkindsofcomplexfeelings,againstallkindsoflove.WinstonandhisloverJuliaspentaveryshortsweettimeandthentheywereforcedtopartwitheachother.

Whatcanweseefromthesestories?Therulingcirclesmanagedandregulatedthebehaviorsofthepeoplebythemeansofextremeemotionalsuppression.Inthetheoryofpost-colonialism,alltheaboverestrictionsarethemanifestationoftherelationshipbetweenthesubjectandtheobject.Therulersofthetotalitariansocietybelongtothesubject,whilethecrowdaretheobjectoftheirruling.Throughtheresearchonthedualisticantithesisrelationship,wecanseethesocialorderandvalueformofthetotalitariansocietyanditisessentiallythecriticismagainstitssociety,politicsandideology.

4.3ThoroughKillofSelf-awarenessandHumanity
