TheSydneyOperaHouse

TheSydneyOperaHouseislocatedinSydney,NewSouthWales,AustraliaonBennelongPoint.ItwasconceivedandlargelybuiltbyDanisharchitectJørnUtzon,whoin2003receivedthePritzkerPrize,architecture'shighesthonour.Thecitationstated“ThereisnodoubtthattheSydneyOperaHouseishismasterpiece.Itisoneofthegreaticonicbuildingsofthe20thcentury,animageofgreatbeautythathasbecomeknownthroughouttheworld–asymbolfornotonlyacity,butawholecountryandcontinent.”TheOperaHousewasmadeaUNESCOWorldHeritageSiteon28June2007.

Itisoneoftheworld'smostdistinctive20thcenturybuildings,andoneofthemostfamousperformingartscentresintheworld.TheSydneyOperahouse:itwasdesignedbyDanisharchitectJørnUtzon,itwasopenedbyQueenElizabethIIon20October1973,itwaspresented,asitsfirstperformance,TheAustralianOpera'sproductionofWarandPeacebyProkofiev,itcost$AU102,000,000tobuild.Itconducts3000eventseachyear.Itprovidesguidedtoursto200,000peopleeachyear.

Hasanannualaudienceof2millionforitsperformances.Itincludes1000rooms.It’s185metreslongand120metreswide.Ithas2194pre-castconcretesectionsasitsroof.Ithasroofsectionsweighingupto15tons.Hasroofsectionsheldtogetherby350kmsoftensionedsteelcable.Ithasover1milliontilesontheroof.Ituses6225squaremetresofglassand645kilometresofelectriccable.

TheSydneyOperaHouseissituatedonBennelongPointinSydneyHarbour,closetotheSydneyHarbourBridge.Contrarytotheimplicationofthename,ithousesamulti-venueperformingartscentre,ratherthanasingleOperatheatre.Aswellashostingmanytouringproductionsinavarietyofperformancegenres,theSydneyOperaHouseisamajorpresentingvenueforOperaAustralia,TheAustralianBallet,theSydneyTheatreCompanyandtheSydneySymphony.ItisadministeredbytheSydneyOperaHouseTrust,undertheNewSouthWalesMinistryoftheArts.

2.TheSydneyHarborBridge

TheSydneyHarborBridgeisthemaincrossingofSydneyHarbourcarryingvehicular,rail,andpedestriantrafficbetweentheSydneycentralbusinessdistrict(CBD)andtheNorthShore.ThedramaticwatervistaofthebridgetogetherwiththenearbySydneyOperaHouseisaniconicimageofbothSydneyandAustralia.ThebridgeiscolloquiallyreferredtoastheCoathangerbecauseofitsarch-baseddesign,althoughthisusageislessprevalentthanitoncewas.TheiconicBridgeiscelebratingits75thanniversaryin2007.

Thebridgewasthecity'stalleststructureuntil1967.AccordingtoGuinnessWorldRecords,itisthewidestlong-spanbridgeintheworldandisthelargeststeelarchbridgewiththetopofthebridgestanding134metresabovethebridge'stwoendsarelocatedatDawesPoint(inSydney'sRocksarea)andMilsonsPoint(inSydney'slowerNorthShorearea).Itcarriessixlanesofroadtrafficonitsmainroadway,twolanesofroadtraffic(formerlytwotramtracks)andafootpathonitseasternside,andtworailwaytracksandabicyclepathalongitswesternside.Thewesternsidebeing305mmlargerthattheeastroadacrossthebridgeisknownastheBradfieldHighwayandisaboutkmmiles)long,makingitoneoftheshortesthighwaysinAustralia.(Theshortest,alsocalledtheBradfieldHighway,isfoundontheStoryBridgeinBrisbane).Atmfeet)wide,itisthewidestlong-spanbridgeintheworld(GuinnessWorldRecords,2004).

SydneyTower

TheSydneyTowerEyeoftenreferredtobySydneysidersasSydneyTower,CentrepointTower,AMPTower,WestfieldCentrepointTowerorSydneySkytower,amongstothernames-hasbeenanintegralpartofthefamousSydneyskylineforthepast30years.FindoutmoreaboutthisiconicSydneyofSydneyTowerCentrepointshoppingcentrebeganinthelate1970'swiththefirst52shopsopeningin1972.Theofficecomponentwascompletedin1974andthefinalstageofthecomplex,theSydneyTower,wasopenedtothepublicinAugust1981.

Rankedasoneofthesafestbuildingsintheworld,thestrikingdesignhasmadethetowercapableofwithstandingearthquakesandextremewindconstructionofSydneyTowerisaninterestingtaleofengineeringandqualityindividualbarrelunitsformedtheshaftofthetowerandthefourlevelsoftheturretstructurewereconstructedatthebaseoftheshaftandraisedtothetopasworkshaftsupportingtheturretismadeupof46barrelsunits,eachweighing27tonnes.Thesewerebroughtontothesiteinsevenpiecesandweldedtogether.Oncethefirstthreesectionswereinplace,agantrycranewaserectedtohoisttheremaining43barrelbarrelunitwascompletedwithliftrails,stairwellsandhydraulicrisersbeforehoisting.

Theshaftcontainstwosetsoffirestairs,fire,electricalandplumbingductsinonehalfandtheliftshaftsinthethetowerstructurewascomplete,thespirewaserected.Thiswasdoneintwoparts,byplacingonehalfandthenliftingthetopsectionontothebottomsection.Thecranedidnothavethereachtoliftthespirefromthetop,soitwasliftedfromtheside.Thiswasachieveddespitethedifficultiesofmaintainingadequatebalance.

4.UniversityofSydney

5.TheKoala

TheKoala(Phascolarctoscinereous)isathicksetarborealmarsupialherbivorenativetoAustralia,andtheonlyextantrepresentativeofthefamilyPhascolarctidae.

TheKoalaisfoundincoastalregionsofeasternandsouthernAustralia,fromnearAdelaidetothesouthernpartofCapeYorkPeninsula.Populationsalsoextendforconsiderabledistancesinlandinregionswithenoughmoisturetosupportsuitablewoodlands.TheKoalasofSouthAustraliawerelargelyexterminatedduringtheearlypartofthe20thcentury,butthestatehassincebeenrepopulatedwithVictorianstock.TheKoalaisnotfoundinTasmaniaorWesternAustralia

6.DarlingHarbor

DarlingHarborinSydneyisnowoneofthemostinternationallywell-knownandpopularattractionsinAustralia,whichhostedmorethan28millionvisitorslastyear.

RedevelopedasagifttothepeopleofNewSouthWalestomarkthecountry'sbicentennialin1988,theharborhasgrownintoamust-seedestinationfeaturingawidevarietyofrestaurants,bars,cafesandshops,aswellasahugeentertainmentcenterandapurpose-builtconventionandexhibitioncenter.

Harborside'smixofshops,restaurants,retailers,entertainmentoutlets,barsconveniencestorescombinedwithitsbeautifulwaterfrontsettingandproximitytothecitymakesitagreatalternativetobattlingwiththetrafficinthecity.
