ECE-492:SENIORADVANCEDDESIGNPROJECT

ThepurposeofECE-492/3coursesistoprovideyouwiththeexperienceofconceiving,designing,andimplementingahardwareprojectorhardware-relatedsoftwareproject,consideringallaspectsofanengineeringproject,non-technicalaswellastechnical,andofpresentingyourresultsinbothoralandwrittenform.Theprojectmayconsistofeitherdesignandconstructionofhardwareortheproductionofsoftwarethathasbasicengineeringsignificance.

Prerequisites:ForECE-492,seniorstatusintheelectricalengineeringorcomputerengineeringprogram,andcompletionorconcurrentenrollmentinallrequiredGeneralEducationcourses.TheseincludethespecificallyrequiredENGL-302,ECON-103,COMM-100andHIST-100/125generaleducationcoursesplusaliteraturecourse,anapprovedglobalunderstandingcourse,andanapprovedfineartscourse.ForECE-493,completionofECE-492,andcompletionorconcurrentenrollmentinallrequiredGeneralEducationcourses.

TheECE-492classhasonekick-offmeetingandseveralsubsequentlyscheduledmeetingsthroughoutthesemester(see“ScheduleandDueDates”).Allscheduledmeetingsaremandatory.

Youaretoformteamsof3or4studentsforthisproject.OneofthestudentswillactasaProjectManagerandcarryadministrativedutiesincludingcontactingtheCourseCoordinator.Engineeringemployersdoconsiderteamingexperiencesvital.ItisyourresponsibilitytocontactfacultymembersintheDepartmenttofindonewhoiswillingtosupervisetheproject.Alistoffacultysuggestedtopicswillbesenttostudentsbeforethefirstclass.However,teamscandeterminetheirownprojecttopics.Allteammembersmusthavesomefamiliaritywithalltechnicalaspectsoftheproject.

ECE-492studentsmustturnintheformwiththetitleoftheirproject,andthenameandsignatureofthefacultymembersupervisingtheprojecttotheCourseCoordinatorandtheFacultySupervisor.Submissionshouldbeinaccordancewiththeattachedschedule.Studentsnotturningintheformbythedeadline(ornotmakingotherarrangementswiththeCourseCoordinator)maybepenalizedwhenthefinalgradeisdetermined.

AllstudentsarerequiredtomeeteveryweekasateamandperiodicallywiththeirFacultySupervisorandCourseCoordinatorthroughoutthesemester.Whiletheattachedschedulemustbeadheredto,itisaminimumandindividualfacultymembersmayrequireadditionalcontact/effortsfromtheirstudents.

ECE-492studentswillresearchtheirprojectareas,prepareaprojectproposal,andmakeashortoralpresentationatajointmeetingoftheirFacultySupervisorandoneormoreotherfacultymembers,notlaterthanthe7thweekofthesemester.(See“ScheduleandDueDates”.)Itisthestudent'sresponsibilitytoarrangeforthesecondfacultymemberandtoschedulethispresentation.Similarly,eachteammustcompleteaDesignReviewmeeting(withoralpresentationofdesignandprototypingprogress)withtheirFacultySupervisorandoneormoreotherfacultymembers,notlaterthanthe11thweekofthesemester.Proposalanddesignreviewdocumentsmustbesubmittedaccordingly.

Writtenandwell-documentedDesignDocumentisdueinthe15thweek.Donotmissthedeadlinesanddelivertheabovedocuments/reportsaccordingtothedistributionlistincludedonthe“ScheduleandDueDates”sheet.Also,theDocumentTrackingFormisduetobedeliveredtotheCourseCoordinatorinthe15thweek.Thefinaldeliverymustbemadeintheformofasingleenvelopecontainingallrequireddocuments.Subsequentdeliveryofmissingdocumentswillnotbeaccepted.

Teamevaluationformsareduetwiceasemester.Eachformmustbecompletedindividually.Thisisnota“group’or“consensus”evaluation.

Teamsarerequiredtostartprototypinginthesecondhalfofthesemester(inparallelwithsystemdesign).Thisprototypingisexpectedtobelimitedtoacquiringandtestingkeyparts/components.Modelingandsimulationisfrequentlyrequiredatthisstage.Thisearlyhands-onexperiencewithkeycomponentsisessentialtothesuccessofyourprojectandhasaninfluenceonthefinalgradeforECE-492.ProgressreportfromearlyprototypingmustbeincludedintheDesignDocument.

ECE-492requesteddocumentation(Proposal,DesignReviewSlides,andDesignDocument)mustbepreparedinanarrativeformasprofessionaldocuments.Thefollowingarerecommendedformatsforthesedocuments:

Proposal

Coverpage.

Executivesummary(1/2-1page).

Problemstatementasanidentificationofneed(1-2pages).

Approach-includingproblemanalysisandrequirementsdefinition(2-4pages).

Preliminarydesign(3-5pages).

Preliminarylistandbriefdescriptionoftasksandallocationofresponsibilities(1-2pages).

InordertosuccessfullypassECE-492ateammustcarryoutanddocument,ingreatdetail,thefollowingaspectsoftheprojectintheirFinalReport.Theseareabsoluteconditionsrequiredforpassingthecourse.

Detaildesignofahardwaresystem(toaresistor,capacitor,chiplevel),anddetailalgorithmdesign(forsoftwarepart)

Systemmodeling(suchasfunctionaldecomposition)

Progressonprototypingactivity

DetailplanforsystemimplementationduringECE-493

Facultysupervisingeachprojectwillproposeagradeforaprojectandindividualteammembers.TheCourseCoordinatormayalsobeinvolvedindecisionsongrades.However,thefinalgradeisissuedbytheECEDepartment.Eachgroupmemberwillbegradedaccordingtohis/hercontributiontothedesignandimplementationoftheproject.Notmeetingspecifieddeadlinesandrequiredsubmissionsordeliveringdocumentsinpoorqualitywilladverselyaffectthefinalgradesofallteammembers.Thebestprojectswillqualifyforanextragradeupsideadjustment.

TheECE-492/493sequencefulfillstheGeorgeMasonGeneralEducation"Synthesis"courserequirementintheelectricalengineeringandcomputerengineeringmajors.TheGoaloftheSynthesiscourseisthat:

“Studentswillengageintheconnectionofmeaningandthesynthesisofknowledge.Synthesiscoursesmaylinkissuesinthestudent'smajortowiderintellectualandcommunityconcerns.Thiscoursemaybeacapstonecourseinthemajor.Thiscomponentalsorequiresstudentstodemonstrateadvancedskillsinoralandwrittenpresentation.ThisdemonstrationwillbuildnotonlyonthecommunicationandsynthesisexperienceofthethirdyearbutalsoontherecurrentattentiontotheseskillsinthewholeGeneralEducationprogramfromthefoundationcoursesonward.”

ECE-492/493satisfiesthisrequirementthroughtheseveral"non_technical"aspectsoftheprojectrequiredinthepreviousparagraphs.Itisthestudent'sresponsibilitytoaddresstheseissuesfully.Failuretosatisfythisaspectoftheprojectmayresultinthestudentnotbeingapprovedtograduate.

TheECE-492/493sequencefulfillstheWriting_Intensiverequirementintheelectricalengineering,andcomputerengineeringmajors.Itdoessothroughtheperiodicactivityreports,theECE-492DesignDocumentandtheECE-493FinalReport.TheProjectPlanandFinalReportwillbecompletedthroughadraft/feedback/revisionprocess.MakesureyousubmitappropriatedraftdocumentearlyenoughthatyourFacultySupervisorhastimetoreviewandprovidecommentsbacktoyou.Failuretosatisfythisaspectoftheprojectmayresultinthestudentnotbeingapprovedtograduate.Theduedatesfortheperiodicactivityreports,theProjectPlanandtheFinalReportareshownintheDueDateScheduleforECE-492/493Documentation.The"flow"ofprojectdocumentstoyourFacultySupervisorandresultantfeedbackistracked.Itisthestudent'sresponsibilitytomeetthescheduleddeadlines,toobtainallappropriatesignatures,andtodeliverthesignaturesheet.
