Totheirsurprise,damagedtreesintheannualburntzoneregrew98%oftheirlostbarkduringthetwoyearsofthestudy.Thoselivinginthesecondburntzoneregrew92%ofit.Butthoseinthezonewherefireswerebannedregrewonly72%.

Indiaisestimatedtothrowawayover25,000tonsofplasticwasteeveryday.Around40%ofitisleftuncollected.“Werebuildingsomethingsustainable(可持续的)outofgarbage,”Banerjeesays.Bytakingcoalandmortaroutofthebrickmakingprocess,BanerjeeclaimsPlastiqubescanreduceenergyuseby70percent,generatingamuchlowercarbonfoot-printthantraditionalbricks.

EachPlastiqubebrickcontains1.6kilogramsofwasteplastic.Theyhaven'tyetbeentriedoutforpracticalpurposebuttestsontheirfireresistanceandlong-termsteadinessarenowinprogress.Banerjeebelievestheywilllastevenlongerthantraditionalclaybricks,whileremovingwasteplasticfromtheenvironmentforcenturies.
