reductioninthedesiretohelpothers.

Inthenextstudy,researcherstracked136peopletliroughonlinequestionnairesandsleepdiariesforafewdays.

Theywantedtoseeifnightlyvariationsinsleepaffectedtheirdesiretohelpothers.Theyfoundthat,whensleep

qualityworsenedfromonenighttothenext,therewasamajordecreasein“helpingchoices“andviceversa.

Thethirdstudylookedathowsleeplossaffectedgenerosityonalargerscale.Theresearchersanalyzeddata

fromover3millioncharitabledonationsmadeintheU.S..Theyfocusedondonationsduringthetransitionto

DaylightSavingTime(DST)inspringeachyear.Duringthespringtimechange,weloseanhourofsleep.

Interestingly,researchersfounda10%<lropindonationsinregionsthatchangetheirclocks.Thisdropwasn't

seeninregionsthatdidn'iobservethetimechange.Itshowedthatinsufficientsleeptriggeredbythetimechange

impacteddonationbehavior.

Alltheseresultssuggestthatinsufficientsleepmakesuslesscompassionateandhelpful.Tliroughouttheworld,

morethanhalfofadultsdon'tgetenoughsleepduringtheworkweek,butweshouldallstartvaluingadequatesleep
