Thevertebratelimbisacomplexorganwiththreedevelopmentalaxes:theproximo-distalaxisrunningfromthebaseofthelimbtothetip,theantero-posterioraxisrunningparallelwiththebodyAPaxis,andthedorso-ventralaxisrunningfromthebackofthehandtothepalm.

Thus,thelimbdevelopmentisaparticularlygoodsysteminwhichtostudypatternformation

Sincethelimbs,unlikeheartorbrain,arenotessentialforembryoniclife,onecanexperimentallyremoveortransplantpartsofthedevelopinglimb,orcreatelimb-specificmutantswithoutinterferingwiththevitalprocessesoftheorganism.Thisisgoodadvantageofstudyingpatternformationinorganogenesis
