S1.Scope.Thisstandardspecifiesburnresistancerequirementsformaterialsusedintheoccupantcompartmentsofmotorvehicles.S2.Purpose.Thepurposeofthisstandardistoreducethedeathsandinjuriestomotorvehicleoccupantscausedbyvehiclefires,especiallythoseoriginatingintheinteriorofthevehiclefromsourcessuchasmatchesorcigarettes.

S3.Application.Thisstandardappliestopassengercars,multipurposepassengervehicles,trucks,andbuses.

S3A.Definitions.Occupantcompartmentairspacemeansthespacewithintheoccupantcompartmentthatnormallycontainsrefreshableair.

S4.Requirements.

TheportionsdescribedinS4.2ofthefollowingcomponentsofvehicleoccupantcompartmentsshallmeettherequirementsofS4.3:Seatcushions,seatbacks,seatbelts,headlining,convertibletops,armrests,alltrimpanelsincludingdoor,front,rear,andsidepanels,compartmentshelves,headrestraints,floorcoverings,sunvisors,curtains,shades,wheelhousingcovers,engine

compartmentcovers,mattresscovers,andanyotherinteriormaterials,includingpaddingandcrash-deployedelements,thataredesignedtoabsorbenergyoncontactbyoccupantsintheeventofacrash.

S4.3(aWhentestedinaccordancewithS5,materialdescribedinS4.1andS4.2shallnotburn,nortransmitaflamefrontacrossitssurface,atarateofmorethan102mmperminute.TherequirementconcerningtransmissionofaflamefrontshallnotapplytoasurfacecreatedbycuttingatestspecimenforpurposesoftestingpursuanttoS5.

(bIfamaterialstopsburningbeforeithasburnedfor60secondsfromthestartoftiming,andhasnotburnedmorethan51mmfromthepointwherethetimingwasstarted,itshallbeconsideredtomeettheburn-raterequirementofS4.3(a.

Conditions.

Thetestisconductedinametalcabinetforprotectingthetestspecimensfromdrafts.Theinteriorofthecabinetis381mmlong,203mmdeep,and356mmhigh.Ithasaglassobservationwindowinthefront,aclosableopeningtopermitinsertionofthespecimenholder,andaholetoaccommodatetubingforagasburner.Forventilation,

ithasa13mmclearancespacearoundthetopofthecabinet,tenholesinthebaseofthecabinet,eachhole19mmindiameterandlegstoelevatethebottomofthecabinetby10mm,all

locatedasshowninFigure1.

Priortotesting,eachspecimenisconditionedfor24hoursatatemperatureof21°C,andarelativehumidityof50percent,andthetestisconductedunderthoseambientconditions.

ThetestspecimenisinsertedbetweentwomatchingU-shapedframesofmetalstock25mmwideand10mmhigh.TheinteriordimensionsoftheU-shapedframesare51mmwideby330mmlong.Aspecimenthatsoftensandbendsattheflamingendsoastocauseerraticburningiskepthorizontalbysupportsconsistingofthin,heat-resistantwires,spanningthewidthoftheU-shapedframeunderthespecimenat25

mmintervals.AdevicethatmaybeusedforsupportingthistypeofmaterialisanadditionalU-shapedframe,

widerthantheU-shapedframecontainingthespecimen,spannedby10-milwiresofheat-resistantcompositionat25mmintervals,insertedoverthebottomU-shapedframe.

Abunsenburnerwithatubeof10mminsidediameterisused.Thegasadjustingvalveissettoprovideaflame,withthetubevertical,of38mminheight.Theairinlettotheburnerisclosed.

Thegassuppliedtotheburnerhasaflametemperatureequivalenttothatofnaturalgas.

Preparationofspecimens.

Eachspecimenofmaterialtobetestedshallbearectangle102mmwideby356mmlong,whereverpossible.Thethicknessofthespecimenisthatofthesingleorcompositematerialusedinthevehicle,exceptthatifthematerial'sthicknessexceeds13mm,thespecimeniscutdowntothatthicknessmeasuredfromthesurfaceofthespecimenclosesttotheoccupantcompartmentairspace.Whereitisnotpossibletoobtainaflatspecimenbecauseofsurfacecurvature,thespecimeniscuttonotmorethan13mmin

thicknessatanypoint.Themaximumavailablelengthorwidthofaspecimenisusedwhereeitherdimensionislessthan356mmor102mm,respectively,unlesssurrogatetestingisrequiredunderS4.1.1.

Thespecimenisproducedbycuttingthematerialinthedirectionthatprovidesthemostadversetestresults.Thespecimenisorientedsothatthesurfaceclosesttotheoccupantcompartmentairspacefacesdownwardonthetestframe.

S5.2.3Materialwithanappedortuftedsurfaceisplacedonaflatsurfaceandcombedtwiceagainstthenapwithacombhavingseventoeightsmooth,roundedteethper25mm.

S5.3Procedure.

(aMountthespecimensothatbothsidesandoneendareheldbytheU-shapedframe,andoneendisevenwiththeopenendoftheframe.Wherethemaximumavailablewidthofaspecimenisnotmorethan51mm,sothatthesidesofthespecimencannotbeheldintheU-shapedframe,placethespecimeninpositiononwiresupportsadescribedinS5.1.3,withoneendheldbytheclosedendoftheU-shapedframe.

(bPlacethemountedspecimeninahorizontalposition,inthecenterofthecabine

(cWiththeflameadjustedaccordingtoS5.1.4,positionthebunsenburnerandspecimensothatthecenteroftheburnertipis19mmbelowthecenterofthebottomedgeoftheopenendofthespecimen.
