DESCRIPTION

TheLM139seriesconsistsoffourindependentprecisionvoltagecomparators,withanoffsetvoltagespecificationaslowas2.0mVmaxforeachcomparator,whichweredesignedspecificallytooperatefromasinglepowersupplyoverawiderangeofvoltages.Operationfromsplitpowersisalsopossibleandthelowpowersupplycurrentdrainisindependentofthemagnitudeofthepowersupplyvoltage.Thesecomparatorsalsohaveauniquecharacteristicinthattheinputcommon–modevoltagerangeincludesground,eventhoughtheyareoperatedfromasinglepowersupplyvoltage.

TheLM139serieswasdesignedtodirectlyinterfacewithTTLandCMOS.Whenoperatedfrombothplusandminuspowers,theLM139serieswilldirectlyinterfacewithMOSlogicwheretheirlowpowerdrainisadistinctadvantageoverstandardcomparators.

ShortcircuitsfromtheoutputtoV+cancauseexcessiveheatingandeventualdestruction.Theumoutputcurrentisapproximay20mAindependentofthemagnitudeofV+.

Thisinputcurrentwillonlyexistwhenthevoltageatanyoftheinputleadsisdrivennegative.Itisduetothecollector–basejunctionoftheinputPNPtransistors ingforwardbiasedandtherebyactingasinputdiodeclamps.Inadditiontothisdiodeaction,thereisalsolalNPNparasitictransistoractionontheICchip.ThistransistoractioncancausetheoutputvoltagesofthecomparatorstogototheV+voltagelevel(ortogroundforalargeoverdrive)forthetimedurationthataninputisdrivennegative.Thisisnotdestructiveandnormaloutputstateswillreestablishwhentheinputvoltage,whichwasnegative,againreturnstoavaluegreaterthan–0.3VDC.
