Ifmonstrousformsofthiskindeverdoappearinastateofnatureandarecapableofreproduction(whichisnotalwaysthecase),astheyoccurrarelyandsingly,theirpreservationwoulddependonunusuallyfavourablecircumstances.IndividualDifferencesThemanyslightdifferenceswhichappearintheoffspringfromthesameparents.Noonesupposesthatalltheindividualsofthesamespeciesarecastinthesameactualmould.Theseindividualdifferencesareof

Thesefactsareveryperplexing,fortheyseemtoshowthatthiskindofvariabilityisindependentoftheconditionsoflife.Iaminclinedtosuspectthatwesee,atleastinsomeofthesepolymorphicgenera,variationswhichareofnoserviceordisservicetothespecies,andwhichconsequentlyhavenotbeenseizedonandrendereddefinitebynaturalselection,ashereaftertobeexplained.
