TheStoryofSuccess.Heclaimed10,000hoursofpracticetobe“themagicnumber

ofgreatness”.HegavetheexamplesofthemusicgroupTheBeatlesandMicrosoft

co-creatorBillGates.Althoughtheyallseemedtohavelotsofnaturaltalent,they

alsoclearlyputinover10,000hoursofpracticebeforetheybecamesuccessful.

However,Gladwell?sbookhasbeensaidbymanytobetoosimplisticand

generalising.GladwelfsworkwaslargelybasedonresearchdonebyAnders

Ericsson,whoarguedthatGladwellmisinterpretedhisresearch.Firstly,Ericsson

statedthat10,000hourswasanaveragefigure.Somepeople,forexample,needed

farfewerthan10,000hours,andothersmanymore.Moreimportantly,Ericsson

saidthatjustpractisingalotwasnotenough;thetypeandqualityofpracticewas

alsoessential.Hewentontoexplaintheimportanceof"'deliberatepractice”,which

iswhenapersonpractisesaspecificpartofaskillindepthratherthanpractisinga
