词汇精讲
1.other,theother,others,another
(1)other是形容词,意为“其他的,别的”,其后多接可数名词。例如:
I'mafraidthereareotherwaysofsolvingthisproblem.恐怕还有其他的解决这个问题的方法。
(2)others相当于other+可数名词复数形式,代词,指“其他人或物”,相当于一个复数名词。例如:
Somepeopleenjoyexercise;othersdon't.有些人喜欢运动,有些人则不喜欢。
(3)theothers则表示在一个特定范围内的其他的全部,表示特指,意为“其余的”。例如:
Youshouldhelptheothersinyourclass.你应该帮助班里的其他人。
(4)theother意为“两个人或事物中的另一个”;表示特指,通常与one搭配使用,构成“one...theother...
意为“一个……另一个……例如:
MissGaohasabookinonehand,andapenintheother.高老师一只手拿书,另一只手拿钢笔。
(5)another后通常跟单数名词,也可泛指单数名词,意为“不确定数目中的另一个例如:
Pleaseshowmeanother(one).请再拿一个给我看看。
2.else和other
else和。ther都是形容词,意为“别的;其他的"。但两者用法不同。
(1)else常用于修饰不定代词,疑问代词或疑问副词,也可以修饰all,much,little等词,修饰这些词时,
else要位于其后,作后置定语。例如:
Wouldyoutrysomethingelse?你要试试别的吗?
NobodyelseinmyschoolcomesfromAmerica.我们学校没有其它人来自美国。
Areyougoinganywhereelse?你们另外还要去哪里?
(2)other作形容词,用以修饰名词或代词,作定语。例如:
Wherearetheotherbooks?其他的书在哪里?
Doyouhaveanyotherquestions?你还有别的问题吗?
(3)other作代词,可以单独作主语、宾语、表语,其复数形式为others。例如:
Somestudentsareplayingunderthetree.Othersareflyingkitesoverthere.
一些学生在树下玩,还有一些在那边放风筝。
3.giveup
giveup是动词短语,意为“放弃;停止;戒除",giveupdoingsomething意为“放弃做某事;半途而废”。
例如:
Iwillnevergiveupmydream.我永远都不会放弃我的梦想。
Thedoctorshadgivenherupbutshemadearemarkablerecovery.
医生们已放弃了治愈她的希望,而她却恢复得很好。
Youshouldgiveupsmoking,whichisgoodforyourhealth.
你应该戒烟,这对你的健康有好处。

4.improve
improve是动词,意为“改进;改善;提高”。例如:
TheirFrenchhasimprovedalot.
他们的法语水平提高了很多。
NevermissachancetoimproveyourEnglish.
不要放过任何机会来提高你的英语。
【注意】
improve的意思是“改进;使更好(makebetter)”,已包含better之意,因而不能再与better连用。
【拓展】
improvement是名词,意为"改善;改进;提高”。
例如:
Thisessayrepresentsaconsiderableimprovementonyourrecentwork.
这篇论文说明你最近的工作取得了相当大的改进。
5.patient
(1)patient作为形容词,意为“有耐性的;忍耐的”。它的名词形式patience,意思是“耐心;容忍”。
例如:
Hewasendlesslykindandpatientwithchildren,他对孩子们总是非常好,很有耐心。
Itwashardworkandrequiredallhispatience.工作很艰巨,需要他有极大的耐心。
(2)patient还可以作名词,意为“病人”。例如:
Theearlierthetreatmentisgiven,thebetterthepatient'schances.
病人越早接受治疗,康复的可能性就越大。
Shewastoughbutwonderfulwithherpatients.
她很严厉,但对患者却很好。
6.provide
provide为及物动词,意为“提供”,常和with搭配。providesb.withsth.表示“为某人提供某物”,其同
意表达为providesth.forsb.o例如:
TheSunprovidesuswithlightandheat.
太阳给我们提供光和热。
Sheepprovideuswithwool./Sheepprovidewoolforus.
羊为我们提供羊毛。
7.runoutof&runout
runoutrunoutof这两个短语都有“用完”的意思,但用法不同。runout作不及物动词短语,表示
“被用完;被耗尽”,其主语通常是时间、金钱、食物等无生命的名词。而runoutof则是及物动词短
语,表示主动。例如:
Hisholidayranout.他的假期用完了。
Hehasrunoutofmoney.他的钱用完了。
Werunoutofwater,andhadtocarrysome.我们的水用完了,所以必须去挑一些了。
8.dependon
dependon意为“视……而定;取决于;依靠”,其后可跟名词、代词或从句作宾语,on也可以换为
UpOHo例如:
一Whenshallwestart?我们什么时候动身?
一Itdependson(upon)theweather.依天气情况而定。
Hedependedonhisuncleafterhisfatherdied.父亲去世后,他依靠他的叔叔。

(1)...enoughtodosth.意为“足够..去做某事”。例如:

这个房间足够大,可以容纳那些学生。
(2)…enoughtodo...可以同too...to…或so...that…结构互相转换。例如:

(3)enough...todosth.”有足够的..做某事”。例如:

(1)enough是形容词,意为“充足的,充分的,足够的”,可作表语或定语,作定语时,可放在名词
的前面或后面。例如:
Themoneyisenoughforthetrip.用于这次旅行的钱足够了。
IhaveenoughtimetowatchTV.我有足够的时间看电视。
(2)enough还可作副词,意为“足够的”,这时enough需放在所修饰的形容词或副词后面。例如:
Sheisoldenoughtogotoschool.她足够大了,可以去上学了。
2.Britishpeopleareverypoliteathomeaswell,aren*tthey?
aswell常用作状语,作“又也”解,相当于too或also,常位于句末,无须用逗号与句子分开。例如:
IamgoingtoLondonandmysisterisgoingaswell.
我要到伦敦去,我妹妹也要去。
【拓展】
(1)aswellas也作“也,还”讲,常用来连接两个并列的成分,一般位于句中。它强调的是前一项,
后一项只是顺便提及。因此连接并列主语时,谓语动词与前一项一致;翻译时要先译后面,再译
前面。例如:
Yourwifeaswellasyouisfriendlytome.
不仅你而且你的妻子也对我很友好。
(2)aswellas可以用来表示同级比较,指“像/和……一样好例如:
Youlookaswellasyoudidtenyearsago.
你的身体看起来还像十年前一样好。
Heplaystheguitaraswellasyou.
他的吉他弹得和你一样好。
3.It'smeaningfultodosomethingfortheOlympics.
本句用T"Itis/was+adj.+todosth.”的结构,Itis/was+adj.+todosth.意为"做某事是...的”,todo
sth.为句子的真正的主语,而it为形式主语,形式主语不能用别的词来代替,句中可在形容词后加for
sb.,意为“对于某人来说,做某事是……的”。例如:
It9simportantforustostudyEnglishwell,对我们来说,学好英语是相当重要的。
It'snecessaryforustodoexercisesregularly.
对我们来说,有规律的做运动是很必要的。
【拓展】
这个句型中的forsb.有时也可以用ofsb.二者意义有区别:
(1)在心+时:+forsb.todosth.中,forsb.意为“对某人来说”,句中的形容词是用来说明todosth.
的,形式主语只能用ito例如:
It9snecessaryforthestudentstodosomehousework.对于学生们来说,做些家务是十分必要的。
(2)在It,s+时:+ofsb.todosth.中ofsb.意为“某人.......”,句中形容词可与逻辑主语sb.构成系
表结构,即形容词是用来说明或形容sb.(某人)的。例如:
It'sverykindofyoutodrivemehome.你能开车送我回家真是太好了。

proud是形容词,beproudtodosth.意为“为做某事而自豪
例如:

pride是名词,意为“骄傲,自豪”。

5.treatsomethingusedsothatitcanbeusedagain
sothat的意思是“为了;以致”,它引导目的状语从句和结果状语从句。例如:

Pleaseswitchthelightonsothatwecanseewhatitis.请开灯,让我们看一下它是什么东西。
【拓展】
so…that…的意思是“如此...以至于....”,它引导结果状语从句。在口语中,so…that…的that常
被省去。例如:
Sheissobeautifulthateveryonelikesher.她是如此的漂亮以至于每个人都喜欢她。
Hegotupsolatethathemissedtheschoolbus.他起的如此的晚,以至于错过了校车。
