thatTheHandmaid'sTalehasmostfrequentlybeencompared.

Paradoxically,giventhismoodofwakingnightmare,bothnovelsusenighttimedreams
andmemoryflashestorecapturetheelusivepastthroughwhichtheirprotagoniststry
toretaintheirindividualhumanity.Butindividualhumanityis,ofcourse,undesirable
inthesociety-as-prison;asinKafka'semblematicpenalcolony,language(booksfor
womeninTheHandmaid'sTale;connotative.reflectivespeechin/984)isrestricted
andcontrolledasaninstrumentofpower;inTheHandmaid'sTale,Harvarditself,
bastionofreasoneddiscourse,hasbecomethesiteoftortureandmutilationofthe
regime'senemies.

envisionasocietyinwhichperpetualwarisusedasarationaleforinternalrepression.
Theeasewithwhichtheauthoritiesin1984switchtheidentityoftheenemymakesit
clear,longbeforeWinstonreadsGoldstein'sconfirmatoryanalysis,thatthe"enemy"is
apretext;jheepiloguetoTheHandmaid'sTalemakesexplicitthesecretagreement
betweenthesuperpowersthatenabledthemtoconcentrateonsubjugatingtheirown
people(388).Botharesocietiespurgedofdiversityandindividuality,basedonsexism,
racism,andelitism,inwhichprivaterelationshipsbetweenfriendsandloversbecome-
orbecomeseenas-subversiveacts.”

beguntodestroyOffred'srelationshipwithherhusbandLukebeforeheis(presumably)
shotwhiletheyaretryingtoescapetoCanada(232,236).Despitethisthreat,both
societieshave-orhaverumorsof^anundergroundresistancenetwork;attheopen-ended
conclusionofAtwood'snovel,itisostensiblythisnetwork,ofwhichNickisamember,
thatenablesOflredtoescapetothesafehouseinMainewhereshedictatesthetapesof
whichthenovelpurportstobeatranscription.

havenomemories"ofotherpossibilities,theircollectivepasthavingbeenrewrittenand
theirindividualpastsspentwithoutalternatives(151).Toforgetapastofchoicesisto
beenchainedinthepresent,aprocessthatGayleGreenehasdescribedas"theamnesia
imposedbywomen'srolesn(30I).'!Asin/984.memoryislinkedwithliberation,a
themeGreenefindspervasiveinfeministfiction.WilliamSteinhofFclarifiesthistheme
in/984:"ifoneiscutofffromthepastasWinstonisinOceania,ifone'smemoryisnot
sustainedbyobjectiveevidence,andifonehasnorecoursetohistory,canonestill
preservefromthedominationoftheenvironmentanypartofoneself?"(179).

demonstratesalsoAtwood'sconsciousnessofplayingoffOrwell.Shedrawsthedirect
parallelinspeakingofthepointthattheEpilogueexistsinparttoshowthat,inthis
futuretime,thereignofGileadispast:"Infact.Orwellismuchmoreoptimisticthan
peoplegivehimcreditfor.Hedidthesamething.Hehasatextattheendof/984.Most
peoplethinkthebookendswithanoteonNewspeak,whichiswritteninthepasttense,
instandardEnglish-whichmeansthat,atthetimeofwritingthenote,Newspeakisa
thingofthepast"(Hancock284).

flavors-rendersarealitymorevivid,andmoredear,thanOrwellcanprovideinthegray
grittyworldofOceania,becausehisprotagonistcannotrememberbackbeyondthe
grayness.Orwellmadetherisk-ladenchoiceofcreatingaprotagonistasdrabasthe
worldheinhabits;1:1Atwood,creatingarichertextureofbothcharacterandsetting,
givesusaprotagonistwhosememoriescelebratethevariegatedpast.Offred's
clandestinegameofScrabblewithherCommanderevokesthesensualityofnow-
fbrbiddentexturesandlanguage:"Weplaytwogames.Larynx,Ispell.Valance.Quince.
Zygote.Iholdtheglossycounterswiththesmoothedges,fingertheletters.Thefeeling
isvoluptuous.Thisisfreedom,aneyeblinkofit.Limp.Ispell.Gorge.Whataluxury.
Thecountersarelikecandies,madeofpeppermint,coollikethat.Humbugs,thosewere
called.Iwouldliketoputthemintomymouth.Theywouldtastealsooflime.The

toherselfandlustingafterhandlotion,emergingthroughherpainandlossasa
multidimensionalcharacter.

practicemirrorshernovefscontent,assertingtheprimacyoftheindividualhumanspirit
byevokingitstylistically.
Inwhatinitiallyappearstobemerelyanotherinaseriesofremembered
conversationalfragments,theCommandertellsOffredthat"Womencan'tadd";“For
them,oneandoneandoneandonedon'tmakefour"(240).Shethinksatfirsthe's
makingthecustomarycondescendingpointaboutwomen'smathematicalability:"What
dotheymake?Isaid,expectingfiveorthree";buthispointisinfactagreatif
unintendedcomplimentwomencan'taddoneandoneandoneandoneandgetfour
becausewhattheyalwaysgetisoneandoneandoneandone.asenseoftheirreducible
valueoftheindividual.Womencannotthinkabstractly,saysthecommander,quoting
Leninonmakingomelettes(273).Thepoint,ofcourse,isthattheeggsbrokentomake
the"omelette"arepeople,andwhetherwomendeservethecommander'scompliment
ornot.Atwood'sfocusisonthisaffirmationofindividualhumanuniquenessintheface
ofthosewhoareabletodestroyitbecausetheycanabstract,canwillthemselvesnotto
seetheindividuallife.Oflredmuseslater:"WhattheCommandersaidistrue.Oneand
oneandoneandonedoesn'tequalfour.Eachoneremainsunique,thereisnowayof
joiningthemtogether.Theycannotbeexchanged,onefortheother"(248).
Orwell,too.usesadditionthematically,whenO'BrienforcesWinstonto
acknowledgethattwoplustwocanequalfiveifthePartysaysso.BoththeCommander
and0'Brienusenumbersasexamplesoflogicalbecauseaprioritruth,fundamentalto
reasoning,andtheutilitariancalculusinvokedbythecontrollersofthemassdystopian
societiesgoesbackatleastasfarasZamiatinsWell-Doer,whoarguesthat"Evenatthe
timewhenhewasstillwildandhairy,manknewthatreal,algebraicloveforhumanity
mustinevitablybeinhuman,andthattheinevitablemarkoftruthiscruelty0(199).16
But0'Brien'spointisthattruth,eventheaprioritruthofmathematics,isrelativeand
subjecttotheviolence-enforcedwillofwhoeverisinpower.Atwood'spointisthatthe
truthofhumanindividualityand(onlythroughthisindividuality)humanconnectedness
isabsolute,inviolable.Rookerelatestwoimagestothispointoftheconnectednessof
uniqueindividuals,thechainandtheMaydaynetworkofundergroundsubvertersofthe
regime(185).Offredremembershermother,ina"throwbacktodomesticity,"linking
safetypinsinachain(263):theUndergroundFemaleroadisahumanchain:"eachone
ofthemwasincontactwithonlyoneotherone,alwaysthenextonealong"(320).
Rookeseesthisrecognitionofthevalueoftheindividual-thatpoliticsand"character"
gohandinhand-as"attheheartofAtwood'saestheticandherpolitics.Itrequiresthe
readertopositionherselfbothwithinandoutsideoftheActiveworld:anditsuggests
thatempathyandthelargerperspectivearenotopposed0(185).Bytransformingstyle
intosubstance.Atwoodhasextendedthereachofthedystopiangenre,sooften
populatedinthepastbyone-dimensionaldemonstrationsoftheanonymityofthe
totalitarianstate.
Abstractionsaboutgenderareamajorthreattoindividuality,inOf&ed'ssociety
asinours.Thenovefscharactersdebatethetheoryof"essentialism,0thenotionthat
genderdistinctionsdenotesomefundamentalandcrucialdifferencesbetweenhuman
beings.TheCommander'sessentialismisevidentinhis"womencan'tadd"point,and
genderabstractionsareeasilyvisibleelsewhereinthenovel,aswhenthedoctorwhom
Oflredvisitsofferstoimpregnateherandthussaveherfromthedeathaccordedto
unreproductiveHandmaids:"Tfdonlytakeaminute,honey?Whathecalledhiswife,
once:maybestilldoes,butreallyit'sagenericterm.Weareallhoney"(79).Thisgender
abstractionisadoptedbybothsexes,ofcourse:AuntLydiareferstoallmenas"them:*
butNickcallsOflredbyherreal,individualnameasevidenceofhisgoodfaithin
helpingherescapeattheendofthenovel.
