AppIconsoniPadandiPhone

Q:

HowaretheiconfilesinmyapplicationbundleusedoniPadandiPhone?

A:BelowareguidelinesforhandlingiconfilesforiPhone-onlyapps,iPad-onlyapps,anduniversalapps.

Ifyoudon'tprovideartworkforoneofthelistedoptionalicons,thesystemwillautomaticallyscaleoneofyourexistingiconimagestoanappropriatesize.Itisstronglyrecommendedthatyourapplicationincludeartworkforalltheiconslisted,atthespecificsizesneeded.

PriortoiOS3.2,iconimageswererequiredtofollowastrictnamingconvention.Theselegacynamesarestilllistedinthetablesbelowalongwithexamplenamesforthemorerecenticons.ExceptforiTunesArtwork,iconimagesincludedinyourappcanhavearbitrarynames.

Note:

iOSignoresthePPI(PixelsPerInch)oficonimages.YoumayauthoryouriconimagesatanyPPIbuttheirwidthandheight,asmeasuredinpixels,mustmatchthevaluesinthetablesbelow.

Important:

iTunesArtworkiconimagesshouldbeinpngformat,butnamethemwithoutthe.pngextension.

MigratinganAppIconSetorLaunchImageSet

intheAssetCatalogHelpdescribeshowtomigrateanexistingprojecttouseassetcatalogs.IfyourapplicationmustsupportiOS4.3,oryouprefernottouseassetcatalogs,youcanmanuallyconfigureyourapplication'siconsbyeditingtheinformationpropertylistforyourapplication.SeeConfiguringIconsWithoutanAssetCatalog.

AddingIconImagestoanAssetCatalog

Selecttheassetcatalogintheprojectnavigator.ItisnamedImages.xcassetsbydefault.

Fromtheleftcolumnoftheeditor,selecttheiconset.Fornewormigratedprojectsitwillbenamed'AppIcon'.Youmayneedtocreateaniconsetbyclickingthe(+)buttoninthebottomleftoftheeditorandchoosing'NewAppIcon'fromthecontextmenu.

IfyourapplicationsupportsiOS4.3youmustincludetheCFBundleIconFileskeytospecifyyourapplication'siconimages.Thevalueforthiskeyisanarrayofstrings,eachidentifyinganimageinthebundle.IfyouhaveincludedimagesfortheiPad-specificicons,youmayeitherlistthemundertheCFBundleIconFileskey,oryoucanlistthemunderthedevicespecificCFBundleIconFiles~ipadkey.iPad-onlyapplicationsshouldlisttheiriconimagesundertheCFBundleIconFileskey.

Troubleshooting

Thissectiondescribescommonproblemsandhowtofixthem.

Note:

Beforeattemptingfurthertroubleshooting,performacleanbuildofyourapplication(HolddowntheOptionkeyandchooseProduct>CleanBuildFolder,thenProduct>BuildfromtheXcodemenubar)andremovetheappfromyourtestdeviceorsimulator.Buildyourappagainandattempttoreproducetheproblem.YoumayalsotryclearingthecontentsofXcode'sderiveddatafolder(~/Library/Developer/Xcode/DerivedData/)beforebuildingagain.

Myapplicationfailstovalidate

Therearemultipleicon-relatedproblemsthatwillresultinyourapplicationfailingvalidationbyXcodeoriTunesConnect.Theunderlyingissuedependsupontheerror.

Error:InvalidImagePath

Yourapplication'sinformationpropertylistreferencesoneormoreiconimagesthatwerenotincludedinthecompiledbundle.

Ifyourapplicationisusingassetcatalogstomanageitsiconsthentheinformationpropertylistshouldnotincludeanyiconrelatedkeys;theywillbeaddedatbuildtimebytheassetcatalogcompiler.

Opentheinformationpropertylistforyourapp'starget.ItcanbefoundundertheInfotabintheprojecteditororintheFileNavigatorwhereitwillbenamedeither<ProductName>-Info.plistorInfo.plist,where<ProductName>isthenameofyourapp.

Removethefollowingkeys,includingdevicespecificvariations.

Ifyourapplicationisnotusingassetcatalogstomanageitsicons,oneormoreoftheimageslistedundertheCFBundleIconFileskeyortheCFBundleIconskeyintheinformationpropertylistisnotassociatedasaresourceofyourapplication,maynothavebeenaddedtoyourproject,ormayhavebeenaccidentallyremovedfromyourproject.VerifythatalltheimagesnamedbyeitherofthesekeysisincludedinyourprojectthenfollowtheresolutionstepslistedunderaMyiconsdon'tappearonthedevice/atoverifythatitisassociatedwithyourapplication.

Error:Missingrequirediconfile

Yourhavenotincludedartworkforoneormoreoftherequiredicons,basedonyourapp'ssupporteddevicesanddeploymenttarget.

Refertothetablesaboveforthelistofrequiredicons.Verifythateachofyouriconimagesmatchesthesizelistedinthetable.

Ifyourapplicationisnotusingassetcatalogstomanageitsicons,verifythatallofyouriconimagesarelistedundertheCFBundleIconFileskeyortheCFBundleIconskeyasdescribedinConfiguringIconsWithoutanAssetCatalog.RememberthatifyouincludefilenameextensionsintheInformationPropertyList,youmustspecifyallimagefiles(includingthehigh-resolutionvariants)explicitly.

Ifyourprojectisusingassetcatalogs,yourapplicationmaynotbeconfiguredtousethecorrecticonset.

Selectthenameoftheprojectintheprojectnavigator.

Selectthenameofatargetfromthelistintheleftcolumnoftheprojecteditor.

SelecttheGeneraltabatthetopoftheprojecteditor.

VerifythatthenameoftheappiconsetisselectedintheSourcemenuundertheAppIconssection,asshowninaFigure5/a.

Ifyourprojectisnotusingassetcatalogstomanageitsicons,oneormoreofyouriconimagesmaynotbeassociatedwithyourapp'starget.

Verifythatyouriconimagesuseasupportedcolormodel.ImagesthatdonotusetheRGBcolormodelmayappearcorrectlyinXcodebutwillfailtoloadonthedevice.Ifyouriconsincludetransparentareas,useyourpreferredgraphicseditingsoftwaretofilltheseareaswithasolidcolor.

SomegraphicssoftwaremayproduceimageswhichloadcorrectlyinXcodebutfailtoloadonthedevice,resultinginablankicon.TryexportingyouriconimageswithadifferentgraphicseditorsuchasthebuiltinPreviewapp.

Apreviousversionofmyiconappearsonthedevice

Yourtestingdeviceorsimulatormayhaveapartiallyoutdatedbuild.Thatis,Xcodefailedtocopyamodifiedresourcetotheappbundleitinstalledonthedeviceaspartofthebuild&runprocess.ToforceXcodetocopythemostrecentresourcesfromyourprojectdirectory:

Removetheappfromyourtestingdeviceorsimulator.

Cleanthebuilddirectory.HolddowntheOptionkeyandchooseProduct>CleanBuildFolder,thenProduct>BuildfromtheXcodemenubar

Buildandrunyourapp.

Ifyourprojectisusingassetcatalogsthenyoumustreplacethemodifiedimageintheassetcatalog.Assetcatalogsdonottrackfilesondisk,optinginsteadtomakeacopyoftheimageatthetimeitisaddedtotheassetcatalog.

MyiconhasablackbackgroundintheAppStore

TheLargeAppIconyouuploadedtoiTunesConnectincludestransparentareas.The

iTunesConnectDeveloperGuide

liststhecompleterequirementsfortheLargeAppIcon,includingthatitmustbeopaque.

YoucanusethePreviewapptocheckyourimagefortransparentareas,whichwillappeardarkgreyasshowninaFigure7/a.Useyourpreferredgraphicseditingsoftwaretofillinthetransparentareaswiththedesiredbackgroundcolor.

Yourapplicationbundleincludesadditionalimageswhicharebeingdetectedasvalidiconimages.

Note:

Differenticonimagesfromtheapplication'sbundle,andthelargeappicon,aredisplayedinvariouscontextswithintheAppStore.Forexample,theincorrecticonimagemayappearinthesearchresultsbutnotonyourapplication'slandingpage.

Youmayencounterthisissueifyouriconimagesdeviatefromthenamingconventionshownintheaabovetables/a.Ifyourapplicationbundlealsocontainsonceormoreimagesthatmatchthenamingconventioninthetablesabove,theseimagesmaybedetectedasvalidiconimagesbytheAppStore.Thismayoccurregardlessofwhetherthoseimagesareincludedintheassetcatalogorarereferencedbytheapplication'sInformationPropertyList.Thesolutionistorenameorremovetheimages.
