GuydeMaupassant(1850-1893)wasawell-knownFrenchnovelistand

short-storywriter.HewasborninNormandy,France,onAugust5,

1850.Asaschoolboy,hewasverymuchinterestedinliterature,and

wonaprizeforoneofhispoems.Sohiswritingbeganatanearly

age,andhebecameafamousnovelistinhisthirties.Hewrotein

wereabouteverydaylifeofthesimplehumblepeople.Ashehad

workedingovernmentdepartmentssince1871,hebecamefamiliarwith

hisbestshortstoryTheDiamondNecklace.Hehadafineuseof

irony.Hisstyleeasdirectandsimple,withattentiontorealistic

detail.TheplaywearegoingtolearnistypicalofMaupassantJs

choiceoftopicandcharactersandhisstyleanduseofirony.

Maupassantsufferedagreatdealfromillnessinhislaterlife.

Heonlylivedfor43yearsanddiedinParisonJuly6,1893.Hehad

ashortlife,buthisworkswilllastforever.
