one

of

China'smost

famous

scientists.Yet,he

considered

himselfafarmer

because

he

millionsof

Chinesefarmers,to

whom

he

had

devoted

his

life.Yuan

Longping

was

born

in

1930

in

Beijing.His

parentswanted

him

to

pursue

a

career

in

science

or

medicine.

However,whatconcernedhimmostwasthatfarmersoftenhadpoorharvestsandsometimes

even

had

a

serioos

tage

of

food

to

eat.To

tacklethis

crisis,

he

choseto

study

agricultureanoreosiedLaneducation

at

SouthwestAgriculturalCollegeinChongqing.After

graduating

in

1953,he

worked

as

aresearcher.YuanLongpingrealisedthatlargerfieldswerenot

the

solution.

Instead,farmers

needed

to

boostyieldsinthefieldstheyhad.How

this

couldbe

done

was

a

challenging

question

at

the

time.Yuanwas

convinced

that

the

answer

could

befoundinthecreationofhybrid

rice.A

hybrid

isa

cross

between

two

or

more

varieties

of

a

species.Onecharacteristic

of

hybrids

is

that

they

usually

attain

a

higher

yield

than

conventional

crops.
