Longping,known

as

the

"father

of

hybrid

rice",was

one

of

China'smost

famous

scientists.Yet,he

considered

himselfafarmer

because

he

continuallyworkedthe

land

in

hisresearch.Indeed,hissimbutstrongbodywasjustlike

that

of

millionsof

Chinesefarmers,to

whom

he

had

devoted

his

life.Yuan

Longping

was

born

in

1930

in

Beijing.His

parentswanted

him

to

pursue

a

career

in

science

or

medicine.

However,whatconcernedhimmostwasthatfarmersoftenhadpoorharvestsandsometimes

even

had

a

serioos

tage

of

food

to

eat.To

tacklethis

crisis,

he

choseto

study

agricultureanoreosiedLaneducation

at

SouthwestAgriculturalCollegeinChongqing.After

graduating

in

1953,he

worked

as

aresearcher.YuanLongpingrealisedthatlargerfieldswerenot

the

solution.

Instead,farmers

needed

to

boostyieldsinthefieldstheyhad.How

this

couldbe

done

was

a

challenging

question

at

the

time.Yuanwas

convinced

that

the

answer

could

befoundinthecreationofhybrid

rice.A

hybrid

isa

cross

between

two

or

more

varieties

of

a

species.Onecharacteristic

of

hybrids

is

that

they

usually

attain

a

higher

yield

than

conventional

crops.

However,whetheritwas

possibletodevelopahybridofself-pollinating

plants

such

as

rice

was

amatter

of

great

debate.The

common

assumptionthen

not
