JamesBarry(c.1789-1865)wasbornMargaretBulkleyinIrelandbut,dressedasa

man,shewasacceptedbyEdinburghUniversitytostudymedicine.Shequalifiedasa

surgeonin1813,andthenjoinedtheBritishArmy,servingoverseas.Barryretiredin1859,

havingpracticedherentiremedicalprofessionlivingandworkingasaman.

RebeccaLeeCrumpler(1831-1895)workedasanurseforeightyearsbeforestudying

inmedicalcollegeinBostonin1860.Fouryearslater,shewasthefirstAfricanAmerican

womantoreceiveamedicaldegree.ShemovedtoVirginiain1865,wheresheprovided

medicalcaretofreedslaves.
