(遗忘与原谅)ForgottenandForgivenAsIsatagainstthesecond-floorwindowofourbrickschoolhousethatafternoon,myheartbegantosinkfurtherwitheachpassingcar.ThiswasadaythatI’dlookedforwardtoforweeks;MissPace’sfourth-grade,end-of-the-yearparty.IhadhappilyvolunteeredmymotherwhenMissPacerequestedcookievolunteers.Mum’sasurgeonandherchocolatechipsweresupremeonourblock,andIknewthey’dbeahitwithmyclassmates.Buttwoo’clockpassed,andtherewasnosignofher.Mostoftheothermothershadalreadycomeandgone,droppingofftheirofferingsofpunchandcrackers,chips,cupcakesandbrownies.Mymotherwasmissinginaction.“Don’tworry,Robbie,she’llbealongsoon,”MissPacesaidasIgazeddownatthestreet,holdingouthopethatthefamiliarfamilycarwouldroundthecorner,carryingmyrightfullyembarrassedmotherwithatinofherfamouscookies.Thethreeo’clockbellsoonjoltedmefrommythoughtsandIdisappointedlygrabbedmybookbagfrommydeskandshuffled(拖着脚步)outthedoorforhome.Onthefour-blockwalktoourhouse,Iplottedmyrevenge.Iwouldslamthefrontdooruponentering,refusetoreturnherhugwhensherushedovertome,andvownevertospeaktoheragain.ThehousewasemptywhenIarrivedandIlookedforanoteontherefrigeratorthatmightexplainmymother’sabsence,butfoundnone.Mychinquiveredwithamixtureofheartbreakandrage.Forthefirsttimeinmylife,mymotherhadletmedown.Iwaslyingface-downonmybedupstairswhenIheardhercomethroughthefrontdoor.“Robbie,”shecalledoutabiturgently.“Whereareyou?”Icouldthenhearherdartingfranticallyfromroomtoroom,wonderingwhereIcouldbe.Whensheenteredmyroomandsatbesidemeonmybed,Ididn’tmovebutinsteadstaredblanklyintomypillowrefusingtoacknowledgeherpresence.“I’msosorry,honey,”sheapologizedandbegantoexplain.
