Otherindicatorsarelessrosy,however.Aroundthree-quartersofpublicationsinopen-
accessdatabasesareinjustsixlanguages-withnearlyhalfbeinginEnglishalone.Andin
spiteofsomeoftheprogressmentioned,overallthereportfindsthatscientificinstitutions,
suchasuniversities,nationalscienceacademiesandjournals,arestrugglingtoinclude
communities,inalltheirdiversity,intheprocessofcreatingscientificknowledgeitself.
TheUnitedNations(UN)’sSustainableDevelopmentGoals(SDGs)arethebestattempt
tomapapathwaytowardsabetterfuture,andamoreopenapproachtosciencecouldhavea
largerparttoplayinachievingthem.
Thatattemptneedsasmuchhelpasitcanget:MonitoringSDGsindicatorsisoneobvious
waythatcitizenscientistscanhelp.SomeofthelargestgapsinthecollectionofrelevantSDGs
dataareinlow-andmiddle-incomecountries,whichiswherecitizenresearchcanreallymake
adifference.
TheUNESCOreportshinesamuch-neededlightonsomepromisingdevelopmentsinopen
science.Thechallengewillbehowtoaccumulate(累积)individualexamplesofgoodpractice
intosomethingsimilartoacriticalmass,sothat,incasessuchasmonitoringtheSDGs,they
canbemadeuseoftogettheworldtowhereitneedstobe.
