Logisticsisincreasinglyrecognizedasaglobalstrategicpriority,withtheindustryestimated

tobevaluedatnearly$8trillionby2028.1

Itencompassesabroadspectrumofactivities

(includingfreighttransport)andinfrastructure

(suchasports,airportsandwarehouses),along

withsupplychainmanagementandvarious

relatedservicesthatcollectivelyenabletheefficientmovementandstorageofgoodsacrossdomesticandinternationalmarkets.Asglobalizationdeepensande-commerceexpands,logisticsplaysacriticalroleinconnectingproducers,consumersand

markets.Inthewakeofdisruptionssuchasthe

COVID-19pandemic,theunprecedentedstress

onglobalsupplychainsunderscoredthenecessityofrobust,agileandrisk-resilientlogisticsnetworks.Businessesandgovernmentsarenowplacing

significantstrategicfocusonenhancinglogisticscapabilitiestosafeguardsupplycontinuityandmitigatepotentialvulnerabilities.

Thegloballogisticssectorisgrowingrapidly,especiallyintheroadandrailsectors,drivenbyincreasingmarketdemandandsectoraltransformation.Maritimetransportwillremainthebackboneofglobalfreight,accountingfor

morethan60%ofthemodeshare.Railfreight

isprojectedtoreachapproximately2.7timesits

2019levelby2050,androadfreightisexpected

tomorethandoubleoverthatsameperiod.2

Thisexpansionreflectsdemand-sideshiftssuch

assupplychainreconfigurationandregionalization,therapidriseofe-commerceandinnovationin

last-miledelivery.Widespreadadoptionofdigital

andsmarttechnologiesandastrongerfocuson

sustainabilityandlow-carbonlogisticsalsosupporttheexpansion.

Thelogisticsindustryexertsasignificantimpactonglobaleconomicandsocial

development,anditsoperationscanleadtoasignificantenvironmentalfootprint.

Economically,thesectoraccountsforasubstantialshareofnations’grossdomesticproduct(GDP)–uptoapproximately8%inmostcountriesand

exceeding10%incertaineconomiessuchas

Lithuania(11.0%)andKenya(10.7%).3The

sectoralsosupportsapproximately10%of

globalemploymentacrossregions.4Thisvitalrole,however,comeswithasubstantialenvironmentalfootprint,accountingfor11%ofglobalgreenhousegas(GHG)emissionsfromfreighttransport,portsandwarehousing,creatinganurgentimperative

forsystemictransformation.
