hours,frequenttravelandtheneedtobeoncallconstantly,ithasbeenanunwelcomingenvironmentforwomen,

“Ithinkit’sgood,”saidRasmus,a31-year-oldcitizenwhowasshoppingfordinnerinCopenhagen.“It’sa
gentlepushtoencourageplant-baseddiets,perhapsfewerporkchoices.”
Thetaxispartofalargerpackagedesignedtocleanupthecountry’sagriculturalpollutionandeventually
restoresomefarmlandtoitsnaturalform,likepeatlands(泥炭地),whichareexceptionallygoodattrapping
planet-heatinggasesundergroundbutwereemptieddecadesago.
Denmark’seffortisalsoawake-upcallformanyagriculturalnations,includingtheUnitedStates,astheyface
thesamecallstoreducepollutionfromfarms.
Globally,thefoodsystemaccountsforafourthofgreenhousegases,andreducingthoseemissionsrequires
makingtoughchoicesondiets,jobsandindustries.Thatmakesfoodaparticularlychallengingclimateproblemto
address.Nowonderthateffortstoreduceagriculture’sclimateemissionshavefacedstrongresistance,from
BrusselstoDelhitoWellington,wheretheNewZealandgovernmentproposedaburptaxin2022onlytohavea

negotiationforyears.ThemeasurewasfinallypassedinNovember.Startingin2030,itwillchargefarmers300
Danishkroner(around$43)foreverytonofcarbondioxide.By2035,thetaxwillmorethandoubleto750kroner

knownplaceintheentireuniversewhereconsciousbeingsraisetheircuriouseyestotheskyandwonder.Earthis
theonlyknownplacewherehumanscanexist.Itistheonlyknownplacewherelaughter,love,angerandjoyexist.
Theonlyknownplacewherewecanfinddance,music,andart.Ourdisagreementsandallthebeautiful
complexitiesthatmakeushumanaren’tmeaningless.Theexperiencesinourlivesarespecialbecausetheywill
neverhappenintheemptyexpanseofmostoftheuniverse
Thesamelessonsthatcosmicvoidsteachusarefoundinthevoidsweencounterinourownlives.The
presenceofvoidsguaranteestheopposite;theycreatecontrast;theyarefullofpotential.Thepainwefeelfromloss
isthelastreminderofthegiftofalifedeeplyloved.Thesilencebeforeaperformanceisfullofelectricexpectation.
Ourchoicetoignorestressfulnewsisnecessarytoallowustofocusonwhattrulymatters.
