ThesoundofAfricanhoneybeespreventselephants.Nowyellow-paintedbeehive(蜂巢)fences

protectsomeofthelocalplots.Theprojectissupporting40farmerswhosecropsareprotected

by15hives.Eachofthehivesisstrungonawireafewmetersofftheground.Thisprotects

themfrominsectsandallowsthemtoshakeiftheyaredisturbedbyanelephant,whichstarts

thebeesmakingsounds.Thisscarestheelephantaway.

Anine-yearstudymonitored26farmsthatwereprotectedbythebeehivefencesintwovillages

nearthepark.Duringthepeakgrowingseasons—NovembertoJanuaryfrom2014to2020—3,027

elephantsapproachedthefencesandmostwereprevented.Duringthedroughtof2017,whichreduced

thenumberofbeesinthehivesby75percent,elephantswerestillprevented76percentofthe

time.

SavetheElephantsisnowpromotingbeehivefencesin15countriesinAfricaandAsia.But

besidespreventingelephants,thebeehivefencescanprovideotherbenefitstocommunities.Bees

providepollination(授粉)serviceswhichcanincreasecropproductionandhoneyfromthehives

thatfarmerscanselltoincreasetheirincome.
