MinorjoinedthearmyofvolunteerssendingwordsandquotationstoMurray.Overthenext17years,he

becameoneofthestaffsmostvaluedcontributors.

Buthewasalsoamystery.Inspiteofmanyinvitations,hewouldalwaysdeclinetovisitOxford.Soin

1897,MurrayfinallydecidedtotraveltoCrowthornehimsclf.Whcnhearrived,hefoundMinorlockedinabook-

linedcellatteBroadmoorAsylumfortheCriminallyInsane.

MurrayandMinorbecamefriends,sharingtheirloveofwords.Minorcontinuedcontributingtothe

regularly,sometimestakingwalkswithhimaroundtheasylumgrounds.In1910.MinorleftBroadmoorforan

asyluminhisnativeAmerica.Murraywasattheporttowavegoodbyetohisremarkablefriend.

Minordiedin1920,sevenyearsbeforethefirsteditionoftheOxfordEnglishDictionarywascompleted.The

12volumesdefined414,825words,andthousandsofthemwerecontributionsfromaveryscholarlyanddevoted
