HowJazzBeganAfterslaverywasabolishedin1863,thoseformerslaveswhowerein

IntheyearsfollowingtheendoftheCivilWarin1865,awholenewmusicalworld

openeduptothefreedNegroes.Theyhavehadmusicalinstrumentswhentheywere

slaves,buttheseweremostlystringedinstruments.Nowtheywereabletouse

professionally-madewindinstruments.Manyofthesewerehornsthathadbeenleft

behindbysoldiersinthenorthernandsouthernarmies.Thefreedslavestaught

themselvestoplaythesewindinstruments,inventingtheirownmethodsofrelatinghorn

soundstothesoundsmadebyhumanvoices.Atfirst,theyplayedthehymnsandmarches

familiartothem.Butthesemusicianswerebasicallysingers,andwhentheyblewonthe

hornstheytriedtoproducewhattheycouldhear"singing"intheirminds.Throughthese

"singinghorns",themarchesandhymnsdevelopedarhythmtheyhadneverhadbefore.

Thehornsalsogavetheplayerstheadditionoftwo"blue"notes-aflattenedthirdanda

flattenedseventh.ThiswascharacteristicofNegrosingingthatbecameabasic

characteristicofjazz.Therewasstillanotherelementcontributingtothedevelopmentof

jazz.Thiswasakindofpianomusicwhichwascalledragtime(拉格泰女母音乐).In

ragtime,thepianoplayerkeepsasteadybeatwithhislefthandwhilehisrighthand

changesthebeatinunexpectedways.Thisproducesaneffectcalledsyncopation(切分)

anothercharacteristicofjazz.ThefirstimportantjazzbandwasagroupledbyBuddy

Bolden,abarber.In1895and1896Boldenwasknownasthe"King"amongNew

Orleansmusicians.WhenBoldenplayedforoutdoordancinginapark,hisplayingwas

powerfulenoughtoattractallthedancersfromanotherparkablockaway."Callingmy

childrenhome"washowBold-cndescribedthis.ForBolden'sbandandothersthatgrew

uparounditinNewOrleans,eachplayercouldcomposehismusicwhilehewasplaying

it;themusicwasimprovised(即兴仓、作),notwritteninadvance.Usuallytherewasno

pianobecausethesebandsservedmanypurposes:playingfordancesatnight,marching

indaytimeparades,playingforfuneralsorridingaroundthecityonwagonstoadvertise

1920s.Asthenineteenthcenturybecamethetwentieth,Negrobandswerebeingheard

followedthemwereblackyoungsterssuchasLouisArmstrong,Thenewmusicexcited

youngwhitemusicians,too,andsoontherewerewhitebandstryingtocopythisNegro

styleofplaying.Butthe"blue"tonesthatcamesonaturallytotheNegroeswerenoteasy

forthewhitemusicians.Forthem,theragtimerhythmswereeasierthanthecurvingroll

ofNegromusic.Thewhitemusicianscreatedthefoundationforwhatisnowcalled

Dixielandjazz.Atfirst,jazzwasknownas"good-timemusic";itwasmainlymusicfbr

dancing.InNewOrleans,andinothertownsintheUnitedSates,jazzwasmostoften

hearditsectionsofthetownwhere"respectable"citizenswerenotsupposedtobeseen.

Thus,inNewOrleans,thisyoungstyleofmusicbecamepopularduringthefirsttwenty

yearsofthetwentiethcenturyinStoryville,asectionofthecitywherestreetswerelined

withdancehallsandbars,alongwithevenlessacceptableplacesforentertainment.In

1917,duringWordWarI,thebarsandotherestablishmentsinStoryvillewereclosedand

jazzmusiciansbeganlookingforotherplacestowork.Bythen,somehadalreadymoved

uptheMississippiRivertoMemphis,St,Louis,andChicago,workingtheirwaynorthon

riverboats.ManyofthoseboatscarrieddancehandsmadeupofNewOrleansmusicians.

Travelingwiththebandswasabroadeningexperienceforthemusicians,whowere

usuallyself-taught.LouisArmstrong,whohadplayedwithoutinstructionbeforehe

traveledonariverboat,wastaughttoreadmusicbyahornplayerontheS.S.Sidney.

MostofthemusicianswhohadleftNewOrleanswantedtogotoChicago.Whenthe

UnitedStatespassedalawagainstsellingalcoholicdrinksin1920,theunlawfulsaleof

liquorbecameprofitablefbrcriminalsinbigcities.Despitethelaw,therewerelarge

restaurantsinChicagowherepeoplecouldbuyalcoholicdrinksanddance.Chicagohad

afree-and-easyatmospheremuchlikethatofStoryvillle.IlwasinChicagothatLouis

Armstrongbecamefamous.Bythattimehebeganmakingrecordsunderhisownname,

in1925,Armstrongwasastar.Hisplayingofasolo—whiletheothersinthebandremain

silent-wasthenKijoreventineveryperformance.WhileArmstrongwaschangingthe

natureofjazzinChicago,otherchangesweredevelopinginthenortheasternpartofrhe

UnitedStates.AroundBaltimoreandWashingtonandNewYorkandBoston,thepiano,

which,hadbeenleftoutofNewOrleansjazz,wasbecomingimportant.Themainfigure

inthisperiodofjazzhistorywasJamesP.Johnson,apianistfromNewJerseywho

playedinHarlem,thelargestNegrosectionofNewYorkCity.Johnsonand

others(includingDukeEllingtonfromWashington)usuallyplayedat"rentparties"in

Harlem,wherethemoneycollectedfromlistenerswasusedtopaythehost'srent.During

thissameperiod,whitemusiciansinNewYorkwereplayingmusicsimilartoDixieland

jazz.TheOriginalDixielandJazzBand(orODJB,asthisbandisusuallyknown)wasa

groupoffiveNewOrleansmusicianswhoperformedatReisenweber'sRestaurantin

NewYorkearlyin1917.Asaresultoftheirsuccess,theODJBbecamethefirstjazz

bandtobebeardonrecordsthroughouttheUnitedStates.Theysetastylethatcontinues
