EsperantoSoIwentbacktothedrawingboardanddidsomemorewebresearch,looking

foralanguage,ormethodthatwouldallowustodiscoversomeofthejoythatcancome

fromlearningaforeignlanguage.Bysheerluck,Istumbledacrossalittle-known

language,andwithinjustafewhoursofreadingaboutit,1knewitwasexactlywhatI

waslookingfor!ThelanguagewasEsperanto.WhenItellpeoplethatwe'relearning

Esperanto,Iusuallygetsomestrangelooks.Butthat'sokay.WhenItellpeoplewehome

school,Ioftengetstrangelooksaswell;I'musedtodoingthingsthatareoutsideofthe

mainstream.Andaswithhomeschooling,itcanbeverydifficulttosumupinacoupleof

sentencesallthereasonswhyit'ssoworthwhile,particularlytosomeonewhomay

alreadyhavepreconceptionstothecontrary.WhyisEsperantounique?Soforthoseof

youwhoknowverylittleaboutEsperanto,Ihopeyou'llindulgemeforamoment.I

wouldliketoexplainsomeofthefeaturesthatmakeitsuchauniquelanguage,and

elaborateonwhyIthinkitissuchawonderfulpedagogicaltoolforexploringforeign

languages.Esperantowasinventedin1887byL.L.Zamenhof,aPolishphysician.

Invented?Yes,that'sright,Esperantowasinvented.Zamenhofsvisionwasthat

Esperantowouldbecometheworld'ssecondtongue,breakingdownlanguagebarriersin

Europeandthroughouttheworld.Obviously,Esperantobasnotbecometheworld's

commonlanguage,sointhisrespect,Esperantodidnotliveuptothedreamofitscreator.

Becauseofthis,manypeople,iftheyhaveevenheardofEsperantoatall,areonly

vaguelyawareofitassomesortof"failed"experimentincreatingacommonlanguage.

Nevertheless,therealityisthatEsperantohasflourished,andonly120yearsafterit's

conception,isnowstudiedandspokenbypeopleallovertheglobe.Itlivesandevolves

justlikeotherlanguages,anditcanbeusedtoexpressallfacetsofhumanthoughtand

emotion.YetamajorityoftheseEsperantospeakerslearnedthelanguagethroughself­

directedstudyorcorrespondencecourses!Althoughalllanguagesrequireefforttolearn,

Esperantoisastonishinglysimplewhencomparedtoanativelanguage.Thekeytoits

simplicityisitsconsistencyandregularity.Forexample,eachletterhasexactlyone

phoneticsound,noexceptions.Eachwordhastheaccentonthesecond-to-lastsyllable,

noexceptions.Allwordsendingin"o'arenouns.Allwordsendingin"anareadjectives.

Allwordsendingin"c"arcadverbs.Unlikemanyforeignlanguages,inanimatenounsarc

notcategorizedas"masculine"or"feminine".Verbconjugationisverystraightforward,

andtherearenoirregularverbs.AnotherkeyfacetofEsperantoisthatithasapowerful

systemofwordbuilding,makingiteasytoformnewwordsoutofrootsandaffixesyou

alreadyknow.Sincealargepartoflearningalanguageinvolvesaccumulating

vocabulary,thisword-buildingsystemmeansthatinEsperantoyouneedtolearnonly,

say,atenthasmanywordrootstoexpressthesamenumberofconceptsasyouwouldin

anotherlanguage.Butsimplicityisnotreasonenoughtolearnalanguage.Solet'stakea

lookathowEsperantomeasuresupinachievingthebenefitsofaforeignlanguage

program.Lookingbackatthelistfromthebeginningofthearticle,let'sconsiderthose

issuespointbypoint.EsperantoisaninternationallanguageBelongingtonoparticular

country,Esperantoistrulyaninternationallanguage.Withintwomonthsofbeginning

Esperanto,mykidswereexchangingpostcardsinEsperantowithchildrenfromRussia,

France,Sweden,Poland,andUzbekistan.Iamdelightedthattheyhavehadthis

opportunitytofeelconnectedtopeoplefromallovertheglobe.Mychildrendon'texpect

everyonetolearnEnglish;nordotheyexpecttolearneveryotherlanguage.Buttheyare

eagertocommunicatewithanyonewillingtomeetthemhalfway.MostoftheEsperanto

wordrootsarederivedfromLatin.ThismeansthatyoucanenjoyverysimilarEnglish

vocabulary-buildingbenefitsbylearningEsperanto,withasmallfractionoftheeffort.

Furthermore,Esperantousesgrammar-codedwordendingstomakethepartsofspeech

andgrammaticalstructureofeachsentenceexceptionallyclear.SinceEsperantoisonlya

centuryold,thereisnotahugebodyofEsperanto-onlyliterature.Nevertheless,thereare

overahundredoriginalEsperantonovelsandcollectionsofpoetry,aswellasmany

outstandingtranslationsofworksfromothercountries.Esperantomagazinesreport

currenteventsfromtheperspectivesofpeopleallovertheworld.BylearningEsperanto,
