Afewyearsago,risingenergypricesandextremeweathercausedaglobalfoodcrisis(危

isneededforbiofuelsproductionandfarmanimals’feed.

Meetingsuchdemandsfacesmanyconstraints.Everyyear,citydevelopmenttakesawayhalf

amillionhectaresoffarmland.Thecompetitionforwaterbetweenindustriesandfarmingreduces

theamountavailableforirrigation(灌溉).Furthermore,thecostoffossilfuels,whichare

necessaryforfarmingandtransportingfood,continuestoclimb.Thebiggestchallenge,however,

isclimatechange,whichisexpectedtoworsendroughts,heatwaves,andthespreadofharmful

insects,allofwhichendangercropproduction.

Onepossiblesolutionistousetheincreasinglevelsofcarbondioxide(CO2)intheatmosphere

tohelpcropsgrowbetter.Since1957,CO2levelshaverisenby25%,butlittleefforthasbeen

madetodevelopcropvarietiesthatusethisextraCO2toproducehigheryields.Researchshows

thatcropscouldbenefitfromthis.Whilethisideaalonewon’tsolvethefoodcrisis,itcould

beanimportantpartofthesolution.Otherstrategiescouldincludegrowingcropsthatsurvive

inhotconditions,usingmoreefficientwaterdeliverysystems,andcreatingappsthathelpfarmers

manageresourceseffectively.

Withoutquestion,thegrowingdemandforcropproductionwillprovidehugechallengesas
