professor'sclassroomduties.Thcideaofacollegeoruniversitythatperformsatriple

function-communicatingknowledgetostudents,expandingthecontentofvarious

disciplines,andinteractinginadirectrelationshipwiththesociety—hasbeenthemost

importantchangeinhighereducationinrecentyears.Thisnoveldevelopmentisoften

overlooked.Educatorshavealwaysbeenfamiliarwiththosepartsofthetwo-yearcollege

curriculumthathavea"service"orvocationalorientation.(74)Knowingthis,otherwise

perceptivecommentariesonAmericanpostsccondaryeducationunderplaytheimpactof

theattemptofcollegesanduniversitiestorelateto,ifnotresolvestheproblemsofthe

society.Whcthcrthesubjectunderreviewisstudentunrest,facultytenure,thenatureof

thecurriculum,theonsetofcollectivebargaining,orthegrowthofcollegiate

bureaucracies,ineachinstancethethrustofthesediscussionsobscuresthelarger

meaningoftheemergenceoftheservice-universityinAmericanhighereducation.Even

thehighlyregardedcritiqueofClarkKerr,currentlyheadoftheCarnegieFoundation,

whichsettheparametersofacademicdebatearoundtheevolutionoftheso-called

"multiversity'1,failedtotakeaccountofthisphenomenonandthemannerinwhichits
