1、英语教师口语入门,A Guide to Teacher Talk in English Classroom,Preface,As we have known that, a language is a means of communication between individuals and an English class is also a practical one. It is clear that the English teaching syllabus indicates: “ The aim of English teaching is mainly to train the
2、 students in listening, speaking, reading and writing, which develops students abilities of using spoken and written English.” So Teachers spoken English in classroom or more precise “Teacher talk in English classroom” takes a great role in students English learning. But when we observe some English
3、 classes in middle-school or even in college, we may find that some English teachers use improper expressions to organize their teaching, to explain words and sentences, to illustrate examples and to communicate with their students.,Here, we have some examples: No. 1 Teacher: Whats your name in Engl
4、ish? Student: Michael Teacher: How to spell it? No. 2 Teacher: Can you tell me when did the Second World War begin? Can you guess what does it mean? 5、cher Talk in English Classroom,Teacher talk means the speeches that teacher uses to speak to students when the teacher undertakes the task in the foreign language teaching. Teacher talk refers to the language of teaching tasks as prescribed in textbooks and the language the teacher uses to perform s
6、uch teaching tasks as paragraphing words or sentences or illustrating grammar rules. Speeches used by the teacher for greeting, comments, task switching, discipline regulation are also included in it.,The Classification of Teacher Talk in English Classroom,1. Classroom English Classroom English is t
7、he words used by teachers in organizing every steps of their teaching. The subject and syntactical structure of classroom English are often fixed. They are used in different periods, different tasks and different environment of classroom activities. e.g. Teacher: Good morning everyone. I hope you ar
8、e all ready for your English class. Teacher: Dont look out of the window. Teacher: Im afraid its time to finish now. Teacher: Exchange your exercise books with your neighbor and correct each others mistakes.,2. Instruction English Instruction English is the words use by teachers when they explain ne
9、w words, illustrate sentence structures and analyze passages. It is the primary way for students to get information from their teachers: e.g. Teacher: When you pronounce this vowel, round your lips and raise your tongue a bit higher. 10、y.,3. Teacher-Student Interaction Teacher-Student Interaction is the words used between teachers and students when they talk to each other, ask and answer questions and discuss on some topics. Teachers can make students more active and distracted by using proper communication expressions. e.g. Teach
11、er: Can you give us some examples? Teacher: Can you follow me? / Are you clear? Teacher: Who wants to try? Teacher: Try to say something. Dont be afraid of making mistakes.,4. Teacher Feedback English Teacher Feedback English is the words use by teachers to evaluate students performance when they do
12、 exercises or undertake tasks in classroom. Different feedback English may have different influence on students psychology. Positive feedback English may stimulate students interest in English learning. Negative feedback English may give them a feeling “I am not talented in English learning.” e.g. T

Teacher talk benefits communication in English classroom. It is worth more attention that application of communicative app
14、roach in foreign language teaching involves putting much emphasis on class communication, and this demands teacher should produce communicative teacher talk and switch traditional class to effective communicative teaching so as to promote students second language acquisition.,2. Teacher talk is the
15、most important input in learning English. Teaching a second language means creating for students a part or all their new language environment. Both teachers and students are using the language while they are teaching and learning the language. Teacher talk can be the largest and most liable source o
16、f students second language acquisition.,The features of Successful Teacher Talk in English Classroom,1. Precise 2. Concise 3. Acceptable 4. Practical 5. Period 6. Flexible,1. English Teacher Talk Should be Precise. 1) Your pronunciation on each word should be correct. 2) You should not make grammati
17、cal mistakes in sentence structure. 3) You should choose proper words to express yourself. 4) Pay special attention to the standardization of your speech.,e.g. 1. Teacher: Repeat! Teacher: Excuse me. Will you please say it again? 2. Teacher: You may ask me questions now. Teacher: If you have any que

English Teacher Talk Should be Concise. 1) Your speech should be clear and easy to understand. 2) Slow down your word speed when you teach new language points. 3) Make emphases on key words. 4) Use words that students have learned before to explain ne

English Teacher Talk Should be Acceptable. 1) Your speech should not be too difficult or too easy. 2) You should know thoroughly about textbook systems. That is to say, you should know what students have learned and what they are going to learn

English Teacher Talk Should be Practical. 1) Try to use daily-life English in classroom to help students remember it. 2) Remember that “The things are meaningful only when they are relevant to us.”,5. English Teacher Talk have different periods. 1) English learning is dynamic. Every period has

Would you please answer the question? Do you mind answering the question?,6. English Teacher Talk Should be Flexible. 1) Use different teacher talk according to students language levels. 2) Use different teacher talk to organize and manage teaching when you use different textbooks. 3)
