3、th the Mars Express Beagle 2 lander set to touch down on the red planet in a little over a weeks time, Stuart Atkinson writes a letter to the lander that has the potential to change our understanding of Mars and our place in the universe.,Beagle 2 was an unsuccessful British landing spacecraft that

4、formed part of the European Space Agencys 2003 Mars Express(火星快车) mission. It is not known for certain whether the lander reached the Martian surface; all contact with it was lost upon its separation from the Mars Express six days before its scheduled entry into the atmosphere. It may have missed Ma

5、rs altogether, skipped off the atmosphere and entered an orbit around the Sun, or burned up during its descent. If it reached the surface, it may have hit too hard or else failed to contact Earth due to a fault.,The Beagle 2 is named after the HMS Beagle which twice carried Charles Darwin during exp

6、editions which would later lead to the theory of evolution.,Beagle 2 was due to land on Mars on 25th December 2003. The spacecraft was successfully ejected from Mars Express on 19th December 2003. Nothing has been heard from Beagle 2 and the mission is presumed lost.,Galileo,Galileo Galilei (15 Febr

7、uary 1564 8 January 1642), was an Italian physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher who played a major role in the Scientific Revolution. His achievements include improvements to the telescope and consequent astronomical observations and support for Copernicanism/kpnknizm /. Galileo has

8、been called the father of modern observational astronomy, the father of modern physics, the father of science, and the Father of Modern Science.,His contributions to observational astronomy include the telescopic confirmation of the phases of Venus金星, the discovery of the four largest satellites of

9、Jupiter木星 (named the Galilean moons in his honour), and the observation and analysis of sunspots. Galileo also worked in applied science and technology, inventing an improved military compass and other instruments.,Einstein,Albert Einstein was a German-born theoretical physicist who developed the th

10、eory of general relativity, effecting a revolution in physics. For this achievement, Einstein is often regarded as the father of modern physics and one of the most prolific intellects in human history. He received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics “for his services to theoretical physics, and especial

11、ly for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect光电效应”. The latter was pivotal in establishing quantum theory量子论 within physics.,Einstein published more than 300 scientific papers along with over 150 non-scientific works. His great intelligence and originality have made the word Einstein s

12、ynonymous with genius.,Neil Armstrong,Neil Alden Armstrong (born August5,1930) is an American former astronaut, test pilot, aerospace engineer, university professor, United States Naval Aviator, and the first person to set foot upon the Moon. His first spaceflight was the NASA Gemini 8 mission in 19

13、66, for which he was the command pilot机长, becoming one of the first U.S. civilians to fly in space.,Armstrongs second and last spaceflight was as mission commander of the Apollo 11 moon landing mission on July20,1969. On this mission, Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin descended to the lunar surface and spen

14、t 2 hours exploring while Michael Collins remained in orbit in the Command Module. Armstrong was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Richard Nixon along with Collins and Aldrin, the Congressional Space Medal of Honor by President Jimmy Carter in 1978, and the Congressional Gold Medal in 200
