You must read the article before the lesson, make sure you understand the vocabulary and the key points i

2、n the article. You must be prepared to discuss the topic in class. At the end of each small group of topics, you will be assessed. These assessments together are worth 30% of your final grade. The assessments will be: An individual speech (10%) a summary of an article (10%) a group presentation (10%

3、),Course Structure,You will also receive points for your class performance. This is worth 30% of your final grade. To gain points for performance, you must: be prepared for every lesson participate fully in class discussions participate fully in class presentations perform well on any test you might

4、 be given,Attendance,You will lose points for unauthorised absence or lateness according to the schools attendance policy. If you miss too many lessons, you might not be allowed to take the final exam.,The Final Exam,The final exam is worth 40% of your final grade. It is a written exam that lasts fo

5、r two hours. It is designed to test your knowledge of the topics and vocabulary from the semesters lessons and the skills you have learnt. It will consist of three sections: an article with comprehension questions vocabulary a short essay,Key Ideas for Analysing an Article,Here are some key things t

6、o bear in mind every time you start to read an article: Who is the author? What have they done in their life and why are they writing on this particular topic? Where and when was the article published? This will give you some insight regarding the target audience. The title understanding the title c

7、an give you clues about the tone of the article before you even read the introduction.,Techniques,The authors will always use literary techniques to help make their arguments more persuasive, such as: metaphor using one image or symbol to describe something else, for example: he is a lion in battle.

8、 simile comparing one image to another using the word “like” or “as”, for example: he is as quiet as a mouse. irony using words to give a meaning that is the opposite of what is meant. Irony is often used to add a mocking tone to ideas or statements. personification giving a personal nature or chara

9、cter to an inanimate object or abstract notion.,More Techniques,alliteration where two or more words in a group or phrase begin with the same letter or sound, for example: “corruption, cronyism and collusion”. repetition repeating a word or idea to emphasise its importance. lists several or many nam

10、es or items one after the other, also used to emphasise an idea or strengthen a point. rhetorical questions these are questions that do not require an answer, either because the answer is obvious or because nobody could know what it is. Rhetorical questions are used to directly involve the reader by

11、 forcing them to think.,More Techniques,contrast using two very different examples to emphasise the difference between them. choice of words the author will always select the nouns, verbs and adjectives carefully to find the right tone for the article and to have the maximum effect on the audience.

12、choice of evidence the author will also carefully select the evidence he or she uses to back up his or her arguments, or to dismiss others arguments.,Reading the Articles,When you read the articles, remember to look for and think about these ideas. Try to think critically when youre reading the articles: the author has carefully selected everything in the article for a reason. This will help you to gain a better understanding of the text and the topic, so that y
