What Is Health?,American Heritage Dictionary: Soundness, especially of body or mind; freedom from disease or abnormality.,What is health?,The word health means different things to diffe
2、rent people, depending on the situation. If I say I was worried about my mothers health when she climbed Mt. Everest, it is clear that I am referring to my mothers physical health, including her heart, skin and risk of developingthe low temperature disease.,What is health?,On the other hand, if you
3、hear the phrase With all these deadlines, presentations and working weekends, I wonder what the effect will be on her health, most likely the word health refers more tomental healththan physical health (although the two are often linked).,History of the word “health”,The English wordhealthcomes from
4、 the Old English wordhale, meaning wholeness, being whole, sound or well.,World Health Organizations (WHOs) definition of health,The most famous modern definition of health was created during a Preamble (导言 or introduction) to the Constitution of the World Health Organization (世界卫生组织章程) as adopted b
5、y the International Health Conference, New York, in 1946: “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity (虚弱).,Different aspects of health,Most people accept that health can be divided into two broad aspects - physical and men
6、tal health. For humans, physical health means a good body health, which is healthy because of regular physical activity (exercise), goodnutrition, and adequate rest.,Physical health,As people experience better nutrition, health care, standards of living and quality of life, their height and weight g
7、enerally increase. Another term for physical health isphysical wellbeing. Physical wellbeing is defined as something a person can achieve by developing all health-related components of his/her lifestyle.,Mental health,Mental health refers to peoples cognitive and emotional well-being. A person who e
8、njoys good mental health does not have a mental disorder. According to WHO, mental health is a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or
9、her community.,No matter how many definitions people try to come up with regardingmental health, its assessment is still a subjective one. Most people agree that mental health refers to the absence of mental illness. Some people argue that if you pick 100 people who do not suffer from any mental dis
10、order or illness, some people within those 100 will be mentally healthier than others. Most people also agree that mental health includes the ability to enjoy life, the ability to achieve balance (moderation), the ability to be flexible and adapt, the ability to feel safe and secure, and self-actual
11、ization (making the best of what you have).,Mental health,II. What is a healthy lifestyle?,There are many ways to define a healthy lifestyle. Some will emphasize the food we eat, others will think about fitness and exercise. Others define a healthy lifestyle more by the psychological aspects: Less s
12、tress, more relaxation. I think there are a few principles everybody will agree about.,Food and Body Weight:,A healthy lifestyle means consuming mostly healthy food, with a good variety of fruit and vegetables. It also means not over-eating, so our weight will not exceed what our body was designed t
13、o carry.,Fitness:,In order to stay healthy, you must exercise every day, and keep your body in good shape. Exercise is also good for you mental health. Being out in the fresh air or swimming in the pool does wonders to depressed people.,Keep relaxed and happy:,An overstressed person tend to come dow
14、n with illness. Many grave diseases were found to have relation to the persons mood. Being surrounded by a loving family and friends contributes to overall health of a person, not only mentally, but also physically.,III.
