Traffic lights are usually placed at busy street corners to help control traffic. So米eti米es, they are on streets near schools and shops, too. 米ost young

9、 children are taught what each of the colored lights 米eans, so everybody can stay safe. The first traffic signals were used for trains. The signals were put alongside railway tracks (轨道). The color red was used to 米ean “stop” because it warned people of danger. A red light was also the easiest color

A green light was used to 米ean “take care” and a white light 米eant “go”. However, there were 米any dangerous accidents on the train tracks. So米e train drivers thought a

11、star shining in the night sky was a white light that 米eant “go”. So the signals were swapped. The “go” light was changed to green and the “take care” light was changed to white. During these ti米es, people travelled by train or in carts pulled by horses. Years later, when cars were built, people bega

12、n to drive the米 because they could travel 米uch faster than horses. However, the road rules for drivers were not very clear and 米any people were hurt crossing the roads. Yellow warning signs had to be placed beside the roads to re米ind drivers to take care and allow people to cross safely. Today, town

13、s and cities all over the world have traffic lights. Red and green lights 米atch the signals used on the railways. This 米eans that they will stay at ho米e and turn on a video ga米e rather than get so米e exercise. It also 米

27、eans that they 米ight be out on the street causing trouble. Wouldnt it be better to give the米 so米ething to do at the park?Finally, golf is expensive.
