1、Culture Shock,What is Culture Shock?,Culture shock can be described as the feeling of confusion and disorientation that one experiences when faced with a large number of new and unfamiliar people and situations. 3、to withdrawal, depression, physical illness, and hostility. Keep in mind : First, most people experience some degree of culture shock when they go to a new country. 5、artha is Alexs American wife and a wiriter. When Mr.Chu lives in their home, Martha is writing her second book. Mr. Chu is a Tai Chi Master and performances as a typical Chinese old man. Martha is the representative of western culture. The culture gap between them is so extreme. so she cannot stand

6、stay with Mr.Chu in the same space. Within this collective family system one becomes only a member of a family in which one must learn to restrain oneself and to

8、subdue ones individuality in order to maintain the harmony in the family,while the American have no conception to stay with their parents after marriage .They pay more attention to personal space . 9、both Mr.Chu and Martha talk to Alex in different language. Mr. Chu likes Chinese food, but Martha is the vegetarian. Mr. Chu isnt unaccustomed to American culture and feels lonely, but Martha suggests that they should be apart to live. Mr. Chus grandson Jimmy grew up in America. He likes American fo

10、od and American cartoon. He only can speak English. He doesnt understand Chinese culture so he cant get along with his grandpa. Also, because of living in NY for many years, Mr. Chus son Alex doesnt understand his behavior too. More and more conflicts appear.,Language shock,Role shock,Marsha: I was

Because he is subjected to discrimination, he hits people and be taken to the police station. After his son pick him up, he decides to live alone and teach tai chi for a

13、 living instead of returning to his sons house.
