We lived on the edge of a wood, and every evening the mockingbirds would come and rest in the trees and sing. No musician can sing more beautiful than the birds. I decided that I would catch a young bird and keep it in a cage and in that way would have my own private musician. I finally succeeded in catching one and put it in a cage. At first, the bird flew about the cage, but eventually it settled down in its new home. I felt very pleased with myself and looked forward to some beautiful singing from my tiny musician. I had left the cage out, and on the second day my new pets mother flew to the cage with food in her mouth. The baby bird ate everything she brought to it. I was pleased to see this. Certainly the mother knew better than I about how to feed her baby. The following morning when I went to see how my bird was doing, I discovered it on the floor of the cage, dead. I was shocked! What had happened! I had taken good care of my little bird. Arthur Wayne, the famous ornithologist, happened to be visiting my father at the time. Hearing me crying over the death of my bird, he explained what had occurred. “A mother mockingbird, finding her young in a cage, will sometimes bring it poisonous (有毒的) berries ( 干果). She thinks it better for her young to die than to live in cage.” Never since then have I caught any living creature and put it in a cage. All living creatures have a right to live free. 21. Why did the writer catch a mockingbird when he was a boy of 12? A. He had just got a new cage. B. He liked its beautiful feather. C. He wanted it to sing for him. D. He wanted a pet for a companion. 22. The mockingbird died because it _. A. drank the poisonous water by mistake B. was frightened to death C. ate the poisonous food its mother gave it D. refused to eat anything 23. What is the most important lesson the writer learned from the incident? A. Be careful about food you give to baby birds. B. All birds put in a cage wont live long. C. You should keep the birds from their mother. D. Freedom is very valuable to all living things. B Metro Pocket Guide Metrorail (地铁) Each passenger needs a farecard to enter and go out. They may or may not comprehend the standards for normal behavior in their culture. They simply dont care about the societys disapproval of their habits or beliefs. Once considered socially unacceptable, eccentric people have been found to possess some positive characteristics. 36 They often have more curiosity about the world and, in many cases, are contentedly obsessed by hobbies and interests. 37 They live in a world of their own and do not worry about what others think of them. So they are usually less restricted and therefore more carefree in forming new ideas. 38 Statistics show they visit their doctors less about once in eight to nine years, which is 20 times less than the average person. This could be partly due to their innate traits such as humor and happiness. 39 This may explain why eccentrics are, on the whole, healthier. Psychologists therefore suggest that we pay attention to those who do not conform. It could be our aunt who has been raising pet lizards. 40 Their crazy hobby or strange sense of humor is what keeps them going. Eccentric people may seem odd, but they will likely live a happier and healthier life because they enjoy what they are doing. In fact, many of historys most brilliant minds have displayed some unusual behaviors and habits. A.Eccentrics are also found to be healthier. B.According to a recent study in England, eccentrics are more creative. C. People may have eccentric taste in clothes, or have eccentric hobbies. D. Psychologists also find that eccentric people do not follow conventions. E. Or it could be our best friends brother who wears shorts to a formal dance. F.Such personal traits are found to play an important role in boosting the bodys immune system. G.Psychologist Dr David Weeks mentions people with a mental illness “suffer” from their behavior while eccentrics are quite happy. 第三部分 英语知识运用(共两节,满分 45 分) 第一节 完形填空 (共 20 小题;每小题 1.5 分,满分 30 分) After the birth of my second child, I got a job at a restaurant.
